Made a new (!) Scoopex demo called 'Blitter Sweet'
Just finished my little Xmas holidays project, a demo in the same spirit as the good old A500 demos of 1988-1992.
It features nice monsters and music by Uncle Tom and a 'special' blitter effect by me. I put it in The Zone since my hosting seems to be down atm. Anyway, enjoy... NOTE: Made for A500/0.5M Chip/0.5M Fast. If you emulate it, TURN ON "Cycle Exact CPU and Blitter" (under Chipset options). Otherwise you don't hear the music, since I use copper timing for the sound. I like it. The design is very 80's, even the music.

Really oldskool feeling ! Nice blitter effect, remember those mad twist scroller on Atari.
edit : nice tribute to the oldskool scene. Last edited by Frog; 05 January 2005 at 14:01. |

Thanks all! Though I've never seen many Atari demos, only had an Atari 520 ST for two weeks, because it came to the shops a little before the A500. The only thing I know about Atari ST demos was that almost all the megademos made you walk through a platform type game and go into doors to select the demos! And I saw a Star Wars scroller that was better than anything I saw on the Amiga.
Since the demo uses almost all raster time available it would be a good test of how cycle exact WinUAE emulates the Amiga if someone downloaded it to an A500 and checked if it still runs at 50fps or if it stutters... Does anyone have that possibility? I haven't got the Catweasel yet. |

It was okay in a sort of retroish way, but this is not the kind of stuff that I enjoy watching today.
I hope you come up with more interesting productions, it's good to see someone producing something for the Amiga, since the demoscene in the Amiga is quite dead (specially on stock hardware. Sod those accelerators, look at the people doing stuff for the C64!!!!!!!!!!!) |

I've tried the demo on A4k/CSPPC/060+PIV. It works only without cache and in OCS mode (selected at the early startup screen). It doesn't run from RAD: device. There are graphical glitches at the bottom (the chessboard) of the screen and sometimes the music and the scroll slow down.
Maybe a whd install solve the problem. Anyway the oldskool style and (mainly) the music is superb! All I miss is more screens with more effects and vectors. Keep up the good work Photon! |

I liked it... great Uncle Tom music and a very nice scroller routine, how can you go wrong?

Doesn't run properly on my A1200 3.1, neither in AGA nor ECS mode. But as you said, it's an A500 demo.
Music and graphics are sometimes screwed up (the logo section all of the time). |

If I had more chipmem I could have double buffered all the stuff, so I don't have to worry about the computer being too fast But for me, A500/0.5M chip/0.5M fake fast is the only challenge.

Good work!
The only thing that appears strange to me is that the zipped adf is ~700k, but the demo itself is only ~ 100k ( and on the disk seems there is nearly nothing else ). |

Hehe, I was in a rush so I just took the .adf of one of my bootable demo collection disks, erased the files and put my demo on it I'll look for some formatting program next time.

Because THIS is a real challenge! (You will never complain about too few mem on the Amiga then again ) |

hehe, yep, coding for the C64 is a challenge indeed! But it's less rewarding for me. Because you can do fewer tricks and the resulting effect doesn't look as good. Also, vectors are almost impossible! In fact, I was blown away when I saw Glenzvectors popping up in a disk demo on the C64!
On the Amiga, the limit of the effects you can achieve if you have a Great Idea is much higher, whereas on the A1200 it's too easy (to me). On a standard A500 you can tell immediately if a coder is great by looking at the demo, because you have something to measure it by. That's why it's the best platform to try to impress other demo coders on, and that's also why people set 64K limits in demo competitions, to make the same set of challenges for all! |

hehe, I was explaining to Andreas why I prefer the limitations of the standard platform that A500/0.5chip/0.5fast is, and don't make demos for a beefed up PowerPC Amiga. I prefer it because it's an absolute to measure demos by, it's limits are small enough to post a challenge and big enough to do nice stuff with, and if you're good you can make something that looks good even to outsiders, and not just to people who knows what the hardware can do and how much work is involved to make the effect. An effect always looks better when you know what's possible and not possible.
When I look at an Amiga demo, I can dissect it into it's component parts, notice any tricks that are there, and can even figure out fragments of code needed to do it. Then, once in a while, a demo knocks me off my feet and makes me go "wtf...how the..." ...for a while, at least. That brings a deeper level of appreciation. I'm sure it's the same for C64 coders with C64 demos. I fell in love with the 65xx CPU from when my Acorn Atom days, the 68xxx family isn't as clean to me, even though it has a capable instruction set and is straightforward to program. It's toying with the chipset that turns me on, and the Amiga can simply do more neat things if you go crazy with it. to Andreas: You're wrong, ZX-81 is the really real challenge! |

I just tried this demo with the latest WinUAE (1.5.0 beta 16) and I notice a strange line cutting the sprite on the right hand side of the screen.
Is this a bug in the demo, or WinUAE? |

Thank you! Must send it to my A500 and take a look at it. Nice thing there's still people who make stuff to A500!
