A500 Rev5 - 3.1 ROM Question

I've seen numerous instructions on the modifications required for the 3.1 ROM to work on Amiga 500/Rev 5 machines. My question: are there any alternatives to soldering? I've already screwed up one ROM by melting it when attempting to solder the pins (thank God it was the ROM IC I melted and not the ROM socket), and I'm really, REALLY leery of completely screwing up another ROM IC, or worse, my motherboard.

I'm hoping there is some sort of wire and hardware connector that can be used, but I'm am not an electrical engineer and cannot find anything on the web.

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

You'd have to ask someone to make you some kind of intermediary adapter.

Or just learn how to solder. You don't have to hold the iron to the pin so long that the plastic melts, only enough to heat it so that the solder melts and wets it when you touch the pin with solder.

Thanks.
I decided I will try again but first practice soldering on some other old PC video boards I found in a box (as in 10+ years old). And this time I will work on patience (never a strong point for myself).
Fingers crossed......

Update - I purchased correct wires (instead of trying to scavenge and reuse old wiring), CAREFULLY soldered the wires to the ROM socket and IC, and powered up my A500. At first I thought there was something wrong, for the power light was lit and I could hear my hard drive being accessed, but the monitor was blank. I was about to power it off when I heard the WONDERFUL sound of my floppy drive clicking, and a couple of seconds later – VOILA! (happy dance – happy dance).
