xtreme racing really that slow?

I've got xtreme racing and it runs quite nicley on a blizzard 030 a1200, but under winUAE it's dirt slow. I'm running on a p400, and most other games I try are at least playable - am I destined to be unable to play this under emulation, or has anyone been able to get a bit of speed out of it?

Lightbulb Graphic memory settings in WinUAE

I have an AMD Athlon 1.8 Ghz, 512 Mb memory and a 64 Mb Geforce 3 under its belt and still Xtreme Racing runs quite slow in WinUAE. There is a way to speed things up a bit. My description may be a bit vague because I don't have access to WinUAE at the moment;
There is a tab in the WinUAE- settings where one can adjust the amount of memory from 0 to 8 MB. It is in the tab used for PPC-screens and screen-update. If you choose the maximum setting the screenupdate will dramatically increase.

Unhappy Xtreme slowdown

Lately I have tried to play Xtreme Racing and found out the game can get very slow indeed on my fast PC. In WinUAE I emulated a 68040 processor and turned the JIT-settings to 8 Mb (see attached picture). First the game runs very smooth, but when the car you control crashes in a wall or another car, the game begins to skip frames although WinUAE states the game still runs at 50 frames per second (again see picture). I can solve this problem by quickly switching between the emulator setup-window and the game but it is far from ideal.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem and is this caused by WinUAE or Xtreme Racing itself?

Xtreme Racing

Good as PC's are, good as WinUAE is, emulating the Amiga's copper chip is a chore for the PC, and Xtreme Racing is displayed using the Copper chip. This isn't really an emulator issue, its a PC Speed issue, the PC has to interpret just about nearly every pixel every frame. 17 year old design foxes modern day PC's..... makes you glad to be alive!

Unhappy Maybe you are right...

You are probably right, Galahad. Looking at the scrolling in games like Ruff 'n'Tumble nothing can beat the real thing.
I still think it is odd that Xtreme Racing runs supersmooth the first couple of minutes and then suddenly starts skipping frames.

Try recent WinUAE + vsync (at 100Hz) and be surprised
(if you have fast enough PC to handle full frame rate without skips)

This kind of slowdowns are usually caused when sound gets out of sync. Does it work without slowdowns if you disable sound?

what if my monitor can't do more than 95 Hz?
Bad luck, eh?

Happy Disabling sound synch has its effect

@Tony,
I have disabled the sound synchronisation and Xtreme Racing works fine now. Many thanks.
It seems WinUAE hit the boundaries of my recently purchased PC.

Tim, I have had terrible graphics bugs on this game..what version of WinUAE did you use? Is it possible to post the config here for me? Thanks
Oh, and turning off the sound alaways speeds things on WinUAE..but it may run too fast.

Arrow Xtreme Configuration

Hi Frederic,
I am using WinUAE Release 3, November 2001 under Windows XP.
The configuration I use emulates a 68040 CPU Amiga with maximal slow and fast memory. I will upload my configuration as soon as possible (probably Wednesday).

Floppy disk WinUAE Configuration

Here is the configuration I use when playing Xtreme Racing. If you want fast screenupdate, turn the JIT-settings to 8Mb and turn off synchronised sound.
Good luck.

If anyone would like more info on this brill game, check out this site:

XTreme Racing

You can download lzh files of: the game (ready for de-archiving to HD), the two datadisks, 1.1b upgrade patch, and an early demo of the game. There's also an interview with Alex Amsel, screenshots, instructions, faq, cheats...and a little blurb stating that the authors are porting the game to... (you guessed it!) GBA!

I find it particularly interesting how the Amiga community have rallied around this nifty little handheld. Almost universally, users and developers alike!

It does seem like that doesn't it. But I did notice how Cinemaware actually handed over the reigns to Metro3D for the 3 Stooges port and to Clickboom for the PC edition.

I wonder if they have any of their developement team left there or just the rights to these titles
