Devpac
Is the best all round assembler, but avoid the rather stupid Master Devpac, as its been 'improved' to not assemble large files properly!
Phxass is one of the better modern ones (I use it for all WHDLoad stuff), but in the main for other coding ventures, I always use Devpac. Other Europeans swear by Seka, but its each to their own, |

That is a very open-eneded question, as what defines best ? Best speed, best ease of use, best price (if you were paying) ? Best for me? Best for you? Maybe if we know the language you want to use (C, Asm, Basic) and your current programming knowledge it wouldn't be that hard to guide you to what the best on the Amiga (for you) is. All of course IMHO: The Best - Devpac Best ASM - Devpac Best Speed - Devpac Best Codesize (smallest) - Devpac (the last 2 were ignoring hand-coded machine code for real geeks/purists!) Best C - SAS Best "Openness" / Crossplatform - SAS Best Basic - Blitz Best Pascal/Modula-2 - errrmmmm...... Best for programming newbie who is learning as (s)he is passionate about Amiga - Devpac (be at one with your Amiga!) Best for newbie who is learning for modern programming - SAS (dive right in!) Best for newbie who is scared of programming - Easy AMOS + printed manual Best for young newbie (< 10 years old) kid - Logo + Real robotic on-floor turtle for instant inspiration (well, that's how I started - not sure about Amiga versions of it) Special award for most useful Amiga language to know - AmigaDOS Special award for most quickly deleted "tool" from Amiga Extras disk: AmigaBASIC Hope that covers most angles ! |

The only one I can think of that you may have missed is:
Best for somebody who wants to do some simple coding on the Amiga that's about as "retro" as you can possibly get: ABasic I'm toying with the idea of trying to do something with that myself, for no good reason whatsoever. |
