[WIP] Moon Patrol conversion

Just a small video to show how buggy it is ATM but at the same time the colors are okay, and there's the double mountain parallax (no dual playfield)

This is going to run on 1MB ECS amiga

[ Show youtube player ]

You'll notice the ugly color bars on the sides. If someone has an idea how to hide them? I"m changing color 0 so I don't have to blit some empty space after the mountain layers, but it has this nasty effect.

You'll also notice that the ground is not scrolling, and the buggy wheels are all in sync. This will of course be fixed soon.

Id love the see an enhanced moon patrol port for the Amiga

can you change the floor color to white or light gray like in the real moon?
I think it would look fantastic and more realist
also a photo of half the earth in the sky as it really looks on the moon

I was watching Pints and Amiga just today and Jack was coincidentally asking about a Moon Patrol port, it really made his day when he discovered this.

For color bars at the side I would suggest:

- ECS Border Blank, since you've got ECS as a minimum requirement anyway (this *can* look a bit weird on real monitors since the border area becomes darker than inner areas with color #000, especially if you've got multiple copper lists)

OR

- Copper list trick. Wait for left edge, set color 0 to your color, wait for right edge, set color 0 to black, repeat for every line (Scorpion Engine does this)

nope I just thinking about an enhanced Amiga port with real moon colors
the pic I uploaded was as example about how it could look like, I did it in 10 mins
the floor of the moon can be enhanced with magicwb patterns or so

btw, I never liked the phantasy ugly colors they inserted in the original arcade, it doesn't fit with the moon

Thumbs up

Excellent new port. The game used to be quite popular back in 1980 and even in the early 1990-ies.
I think best is first to do a proper as close as do original native port, then skins and other enhancements will be very easy.
The game has many ports. I think Atari ST port will be very easy as well, or even easier, since it uses 68000 CPU.
Here is the Atari ST port completed by me:

Other (not complete list) of ports of the game:
Apple II

Atari 2600

IBM PC

Nintendo GameBoy

Nintendo GameBoy Color

Sinclair ZX Spectrum

Commodore 64

Atari 800
[ Show youtube player ]
Coleco Vision (remake)
[ Show youtube player ]
Sord M5

There were also some Oric and even Amiga remakes, of which I don't remember the names, but for Oric, Super Jeep is very close:

Here are some playthroughs of the different arcade versions by me:

Would love to play another version of this hit classic arcade game!

Nice mockup but IMHO if you convert everything into gray you get a B & W game. Adding the earth is a good idea but it will consume a lot of colors that I don't have in the 16 color display.

Those games are colored for a reason: attract the player. If they want B/W they just watch Buster Keaton

I remember Oric super jeep. Nice effort, big hit at the time. Most of those ports lack the slopes for instance. Gameboy versions are great (except that the music is out of tune! they missed the easiest part...)

that's not going to be too difficult as the AY-8192 is really crap at noise.

My min req is not ECS but OCS (1MB RAM, but 512k chip). How would it behave on OCS? If it does nothing, then why not, at least for the first releases.

Yes, but I don't want to set all colors of the rest of the lines. I could but I'll see if I have no other option. After all it may be not as hard as it seems, as I already have dynamic per line color change in my copperlist.

From memory it does indeed just "do nothing" on OCS, doesn't break anything but doesn't hide the copper bars at the sides.

That's fair. Good luck, I'm definitely curious to see what you do in the end
