Damn i hate it when someone is right! All of those games are perfectly playable and i had completely forgotten that Psygnosis had made them. Especially Perihelion which i finished.

I will beg to differ with The Killing Game Show though. that game was insanely difficult!. I still loved it though.

"Killing Game Show" was "Fatal Rewind" on the Genesis and marketed by Electronic Arts. I never tried it, but will do so soon.

Bah. It's clunky. It's impossible. It's fucking hard. It's dated. But when I play it I feel six again =D And the music still gives me shivers. So it's still my favourite. So stinky poo to all of you.

*giggle*

THAT SAID : I never could play it without a cheat. In fact when I play it without a cheat I die in like, twelve seconds. And the Game Over bit, whilst extremely pretty, you just WISH you could fucking SKIP so you can start AGAIN but you CAN'T and it's INFURIATING.

I find it hilarious that in the hacked version next to the trainer there's an 'Intro' switch.. that really says a lot. It's pretty and haunting and lovely and personally I never get sick of watching it boot up, but not everyone is such a beastophile. There were many times you just wanted to go 'OMGZ!@#$ MAKE IT GO FASTER' but that's really all it *could* do at the time. We were dealing with like, tiny TEENY 512k rammy bits and processors that just make an autistic child with maths problems laugh their asses off.. BUT, it was still badass.. Which is more than you can say for a lot of stuff around at the time, and even most/all the PC stuff that was around even til the mid nineties.. and I'm ranting..

Dynamite Dux. Nuff said. tee hee.

There's no technical reason for the intro/death screens to be unskippable of course.

Heheh, I do this too, it's the easiest way to win :-)

By the way there was an Atari Lynx version of SOTB, it's quite good.

As far as overrated games go, my vote would be on Xenon 2. But I guess that's a topic for another thread...

Indeed. At least the reviewers gave them hell about it in this instance.

Forced waits like that really *really* annoy me. Programmers try to minimize loading times and then put in these crap screens with fade-ins/fade-outs, even when it does listen for a button press it is still annoying.

But sometimes very pretty =D

heh, note that in Beast 2 and 3 they both start pretty much instantly after you push the button at the intro screens *giggle*

Psygnosis did a few good games imo..

Killing Game Show
Nitro
Lemmings
Hired Guns
Armourgeddon
Armourgeddon II
Benefactor
Blood Money
Brian the Lion
Leander
Walker
Wiz 'n' Liz

in all honesty only armourgeddon was in-house.. the rest were not developed by Psygnosis.. still a good few classics there!

It didn't really work that way. The in-house team was used as a resource for external developers. Most Psygnosis games had some input from the in-house team. Nitro had graphics and levels designed in-house. I did some levels for Hired Guns, and did sound effects for Brian The Lion and Wiz'n'Liz. Wiz 'n' Liz itself (original megadrive version) was developed by Martyn while working in our office and the graphics were by another in-house artist, Mike Waterworth (who, no surprise, now works for Martyn at Bizarre Creations). Killing Game Show graphics were done in-house. The most independent developers that I can think of were DMA, Digital Illusions and Traveller's Tales. Some of those games were totally out-of-house, but not all.

Mike, were you at Psygnosis when Beast was first shown by Reflections?

If so, forget about playability, but just on pure looks, how did it go down at Psygnosis?

The furthest I got with Shadow of the Beast on the Amiga was when you get the Jet Pack and take on one of the bosses in the Castle. I remember the music changing, and I really liked it. I can't remember anything about the boss though...did he throw out creatures...I can't remember..

Interesting thread this because...

I've been playing Shadow of the Beast on the PC Engine Turbo Duo (CD ROM ROM). This version has a nice Arranged Soundtrack. If you would like to hear alittle of it let me know. I can convert the wav file to Mp3. I also like the fact it has some small movies too. I've managed to get to the castle so far..but no further at the moment..

It may not be the best game ever, but Beast 1 definitely has a certain 'charm' about it.

I know that site Kodoichi mentioned, cool webpage

Yup, unfortunately they don't have the FM Towns version probably as this is quite hard to get...

I'll convert the .wav files --> .mp3 files, zip them up and then upload them to a file hosting site like FileFactory (as I don't want to clog up The Zone!)

I should probably offer them to Titan while I'm at it

Ok guys, I converted the 7 x .wav files from the Shadow of the Beast [FM Towns] image --> .mp3 files using CDex. Hopefully the quality settings are cool for everyone (see image).

I then WinRAR'd all the .mp3 files (38.3Mb) and uploaded it to File Factory. Here's the link:

Enjoy
