Ok I have two A1200 accelerators....
I must sell one..... 1. Apollo 1240/32 68882 FPU 32mb RAM - in use daily. 2. Blizzard 1230 IV 50MHz 68882 FPU 32mb RAM - not yet put to any use. Which should go???? |

If you like gaming keep the Blizzard, besides a 68030 clocked at 50Mhz (with the correct FPU) is probably about the same as a 68040/25 anyway. The 040 will get you more money also (if you are in need of money and have to sell something).

In CISC it is about how many clock cycles per instruction (AKA MIPS) and how powerful (complicated) the instructions are. Then you have to take into consideration how complicated the instruction and data pipelines are, how big the Caches are etc. How long it takes to load a cache line etc. Last edited by alexh; 30 August 2006 at 23:52. |

Overall you have to take into acount what the computer is used for (I asked if he was a gamer since an 040 would hurt more then help) plus what the memory bus is clocked at (50Mhz vs 25Mhz) etc.
Outside of a benchmark you need to get more then 2x as fast overall for most people to even notice a difference. At the end of the day I would keep what does the job I need, is the most stable, and generates the least amount of heat (if you are going to keep it in a desktop A1200). Or if you are selling because you need the cash, the most money. About the only thing the 040 chip has over the 030 is a much faster FPU which unless you need it on an Amiga for ray tracing apps is not that important. I don't have an 040 to compare it to my 030/50 blizzard, but my 68030/40 Mac IIfx keeps up with my 68040/33 Quadra 950's failry well outside of FPU related programs in normal use (the IIfx is only 40Mhz but has special RAM and some CPU cache). |

Thanks guys, I dont need the cash, I just need to keep the clutter down!!
I just put the 1230 in my A1200 (specs below) It got 8.14 MIPS (Meaningless Items Per Second) in sysinfo. This compares to the Apollo 1240 which gets 18.24 MIPS. More than twice the differnce. Unknown_K makes a valid point about games, some dont work on the 040... I think I will probably keep them both |

It's a pitty we dont know anyone in Freescale (aka Motorola) who could get us some of the last generation 68040s.
The last ones run practically cold compared to the early ones used on the A1200 Amiga accelerators. http://groups.google.co.uk/group/com...a740cc3d9270bc Th MC68040RC40A with mask L88M should work much cooler even at 40MHz than the XC68040RC25 chips running at 25MHz |
