Unofficial CD32 Ports
Hi there,
I've recently become the owner of a CD32 (for the second time - I used to have one back in the 90's) and have began creating single-game unofficial CD32 ports of my favorite Amiga disk-based games. Whilst doing so I've discovered various caches of unofficial CD32 ports around the web - but there doesn't seem to be a one-stop-shop for these anywhere, or indeed any sort of standard image (ISO/CUE-BIN/CCD/RAW/NRG, etc.) I'm considering starting an online list of unofficial ports, complete with system requirements (i.e. whether or not the port works on an out-of-the-box CD32 or requires extra RAM, keyboard, mouse, etc.), complete with CD Jewelcase artwork and *tested* ISO's for download with burning instructions/recommendations for n00bs. Question is, would anyone be interested in such a resource? I'm aware that those 200/350/444/888 compilations are available (and are superb IMO), but sometimes it's nice to have auto-booting single-game disks with their own case artwork (especially for personal favourites). Also, what happened to the online archive of custom/unofficial CD32 covers? I can't find it anywhere... |

Two games I've done so far (in learning how to master the art of creating bootable CDs) can be found here:
(Microbes, Vision Software, 1992) (Works on an out-of-the-box CD32) http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=441060&postcount=15 (Monsters Of Terror, Starfox & Zeronine, 1995) (Requires keyboard for multiplayer, but otherwise works on an out-of-the-box CD32) http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=441507&postcount=21 Both zips contain artwork for a CD Jewelcase. Please note that I require some assistance in removing the mouse cursor in Monsters. Can anyone help? J |

There's a utility on Aminet called mouseoff http://aminet.net/search?query=mouseoff
I don't know whether it would work on a CD32 though. Might be worth a try. Dave G |

Unfortunately that program doesn't fix it... The mouse becomes visible again whenever you move player two's joypad.
Made another ISO and artwork: (Cybernetix, Vision Software, 1992) (Requires keyboard for smartbomb (Space), but otherwise works on an out-of-the-box CD32) http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=441545&postcount=25 |

...and another one!
(Kiro's Quest, Vision Software, 1992) (Works on an out-of-the-box CD32) http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=441565&postcount=26 |

...and another!
(Jimmy's Fantastic Journey, Melon Dezign, 1995) (Requires keyboard for menu options (Space), but otherwise works on an out-of-the-box CD32) http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=441785&postcount=33 |

Last one from me for a while... Woodys World, Vision/Acid 1993. Works on a 2MB CD32, but requires a keyboard to access the options menu (ESC) where you can enter level codes and change the control method to joypad. It's in the Zone.

I think this is a great idea, I love my CD32. It is fortunate that some of the WHDLoad patchers are making installs for several games that take advantage of the extra buttons on the CD32 pad to replace keys and "up for jump". I think if you find any games that would benefit from such a patch, so they can run on stock CD32s without a keyboard, you should let the WHDLoad guys know and they might just patch it.
Recently Ruff 'n' Tumble and New Zealand Story both got support for a jump button, and there are more out there that have been and are going to be patched too. |

Hi Cammy - yeah, I'll need to check that out. Annoyingly, some of the games above only require a key press so you can access an options menu (where you can thereafter select joypad control) - apart from that some of them *would* work on a standard machine!
I'll have to contact the WHD patchers to see if someone is willing to make a fix for some of these. Cybernetix would be a worthwhile one - all it needs is the space bar redirected to a second button... highscores, etc. are already mapped to the joystick. |

Right - an update... My CD32 arrived, and I need to make a few fixes to the games above: I need to swap Microbes with the WHDLoad version (to remove the spash screen delay), and at the moment Jimmys FJ and Woodys World do not load.
First port of call is to swap WHDLoad for WHDLoadCD32 to try and save some memory and I also need to figure out how to optimise my startup-sequence... Any clues/tips would be appreciated More news later. |
