Stereo sound with audio.device

A long time ago I looked up how you can make stereo sound with audio.device. According to the example I found, you have to make two copies of the main IOAudio request with new ports, and mask out the io_Unit field to have the correct channel number. This works reasonably well, but since you have to call BeginIO twice, once for the left and once for the right channel, sometimes they can be slightly out of phase with each other, producing an echo-like effect.
Is there any way to ensure the IORequests for the two channels start at the same time, or maybe I'm better off using audio.device to just allocate the channels and then bang the hardware instead?

This is covered under the description of CMD_START.

Send CMD_STOP first, then CMD_WRITE for each channel, then CMD_START. All channels will begin playing simultaneously.

Thanks this is exactly what I was looking for. I completely missed STOP/START, even though I used this wiki page a lot
