100 pin header inside GVP A500-HD+

I've had the GVP unit for a while(!) now and it's been very usefull. But I'd like to use it to boost my A500+ a little more.

So this isn't so much a problem, more a request to anyone who knows if the 100 pin header on the PCB in this is a zorro interface? Right number of pins, right volts on the pins in the right places.... looks very close to me. I've tried phoning GVP - yes, from England at international phone rates! But no joy. they couldn't find anyone there who knew about it.

If you know anyone who might have been involved at GVP PLEASE ask them to let me know!

If this is a zorro II interface, then towering the A500+ with one of these has a lot more point than just giving me somewhere to stick the couple of SCSI CDROM drives I've got lying around

Actually it may be a propreitary GVP interface for things like there x86 PC cards and the like. Not sure if it actually supports Zorro 1 cards or not.

jmmijo is right, its a propreitary GVP interface for GVP's 286 cards. Havent heard that it has been used for anything else.

RetroMan, are you use this is a Zorro1 slot ?

I don´t own this item anymore, but as I recall from the manual of the GVP-HD+ it is used to pass through the expansion Port of the 500er to also make use of a CDRom like the A570 and the expansion Port of the A500 IS a Zorro I Slot Anyway, I may be wrong on this one since it´s a long time ago I owned this thingy

Retroman, are you sure the HD8+ came with a pass thru? Can't tell by the picture below, but it does not look like it.

I think Syko is talking the 100pin connector on the inside of the device (look at picture below, its the connector that has 99 on the LHS). The connector is a series of 100 pins rather than a "slot" type connector.

As I said, I might be wrong cause it was a long time ago I´ve read the manual I ever thought there must be a kind of adapter to bring the slot back out of the case (a cable ?)

Miggy2TheMax is spot on.

the A530 had a 68030 and RAM as well as the SCSI HD and a 100 pin connector for a PC on a card. There's a 100 pin connector on the HD+; I think this was a early implementation of the connector on the A530. Amiga had a 100 way connector - zorro. So why invent a new one when there's one ready and tested?

If this connector is the same spec as a zorro II slot - and it would need to be to work with the A500 (zorro I requires some A1000 h/w) then everyone with this or the A530 has a ready made zorro interface which could be very easy to adapt if the boards where fitted in a tower case... with ZII slots you can fit powerPC cards, gfx cards, add OS3.9 and you've got a system that can still give good service with todays applications!

Show me a PC from 1986 that could even start to match that!

Yeah, thats the slot for the GVP 286 card, its a PC on a card and you could run DOS programs on it.

And hey, I got one of those A530's. Fine beasties too.

You must have missed it on ebay then, twas AU$100, thats US$50 for you yanks. and not one bid. This was when I needed the money.

As a consequence, it now stays, 4mb GVP Ram and 1GIG SCSI drive. 030/mmu/fpu.

But for some reason, the fan has failed and the only noise it makes is the HDD.

Buggah, just my luck. You should be able to buy a new fan from an electronics store.
I collect all sorts of A500 hardware .. so if you have any a500 stuff that you don't want, pm me.

I have 3x A520's (One from UK), Operational status, unknown.

Last I knew, UK one worked 100%.
2x Aussy ones worked.

I have 2x 1084s's so i dont need them.

[edit] I will send this via PM too. From the last I looked, the fan was stuck in place, not screwed, but i could be wrong.

If they are like the A530's then the cooling fan inside is glued into place. I had to replace one of these and it was a bit of a pain to carefully cut around the glue seem and then I was finally able to pry it free and mount the other fan with screws. I used old 486/Pentium CPU fans for this purpose.

Well I am not hammering the CPU so it can wait, mostly WHDloading my originals and floppying them to my PC.

If the fan's stuck to the cpu, then lever it off with a flat-bladed screwdriver, and then stick the replacement down with thermal epoxy - Arctic Silver epoxy from theoverclockingstore.co.uk - try links from dansdata.com in Oz for stores there.

The fan on my HD+ was very noisy and glued to the case - smashed it out, and replaced with a fan from Maplin.co.uk and some araldite, been perfect ever since (about 5 years).

Good info there Syko, thanks.

But in the case of the GVP A530 Turbo units, they have a small cooling fan that is glued to the top plastic cover, at least they are on the US version of these units. I'm thinking they are most likely the same on *all* of them no matter where they were sold
