Yikes! My phone (!) is faster than a SAM. Hope you're having fun anyway.

For those not keeping up, it's not looking too good for the X1000.

After the initial bizarre announcement, progress has been very slow and details scarce.

If it ever does make it to retail, it will obviously sell a few units to dedicated Amigans but beyond that....

If this was Hyperion's 'master plan' after fighting so long with Amiga Inc for the rights then they are in big trouble.

After all the dust settles I guess AROS will be the only one still standing

You have to wonder how different things would have been if they hadn't gone PPC back in the day with OS3.9 (68k to x86 is much easier [see WinUAE] than 68k to PPC to x86).

I would have loved to have seen an 68060 specific OS3.9 running on 100Mhz boards with some decent memory, that would have been impressive

Whatever you think of the x86 platform, in this day and age (we're not pioneering computers or OS'es any more) AROS is probably the way to go if you want a Workbench style system. You could have a special 'premium' machine like the BeBox that BeOS had, for people who have already tried and enjoyed it, but I don't think many are going to pay the kind of money you have to pay for the custom systems, just to try it out. A few will, but let's attract the other 7 users

Find the x1000 price bizarre when the Aros system works out cheaper let alone it even comes with amiga forever

It's not popular but it's the truth, The only way to sell hardware at an acceptable price is to make it x86 based. Nobody wants a $1000 motherboard to run AOS and linux. 20+ years of PC vendors fighting it out has dropped the price such that nothing else can compete in the consumer space. That's the real reason Apple switched to x86.

Hyperion needs to stop hitching their wagon to these one-off hardware makers if they want the os to survive. I seriously hope Hyperion is porting AOS4 to x86. In fact they should go straight to a 64bit OS (x86-64). Even an ARM port would be good... Amiga powered iPad type thingie...

I'm also seriously considering a natami to get a retro fix

Really? Nowadays you get very cheap system-on-chip modules. Just look at The Beagleboard, this certainly aint more expensive than Atom-based stuff even if it pushes nowhere near the numbers. In fact the only reason to go x86 still is either software compatibility or need for highend-performance - Intel ships around 200 Mio CPUs per year, ARM totals over 3 Billion (I know theres also AMD and Via but I think its safe to say that there`s atleast a factor of 10 difference)
If there were such a Beagle-board with a couple more connectors (sata!!) I`d likely be running one now.

Gahh... I wish I would understand a thing about Hardware design.

Totally agree AOS should go ARM. I said that in my previous post. Great for low end and mobile devices. They're cheap for the same reason x86 is cheap. You will never see a desktop ppc board for that kind of cost. For maximum desktop performance x86 is the way to go. There's a reason nobody builds atom or arm based desktops.

So a dual strategy, ARM for mobile, x86 for desktop. Hmm... that sounds familiar

You said "consumer" so I dint really understand what you were saying. I agree that it would take some serious effort to embrace a modular system like x86 has, but is this really needed for "consumers"? More often than not you have to replace your Motherboard when buying a fancy new CPU anyway, and I wouldn`t consider classic keyboard-type Amigas "desktops".

Performance of ARM and MIPS CPUs quickly approaches levels where you really couldnt care for more for everyday tasks. To me, if someone is content with running Linux for all his needs (Im certainly not) then theres no need for either the Windows or x86 lockdown.
The problem is that lacking the capability to run Windows is a serious blow to most people and unacceptable if its their one and only computer. And thus there just aint enough market for a diverse non-x86 modular system, its not so much the need for performance IMHO. Btw, there are Atom-powered desktops (for example by Zotac) and mainboards available

So I will likely always have a x86 based system around, but thats all just more reason that eventual "hobby-systems" arent crippled by that horrible architecture.

I'm having a one night stand with Juci Jeni for £1200 tonight! Cheaper than an X1000, bargain!

Plus, she said she'll do some saucy pics holding one of my A500's licking it for an extra tenner

Nope, way too expensive for what you get. For $300 I could buy a considerably faster AROS system (heck, even amithlon/os3.9 running an emulated 68k cpu on said $300 system is probably just as fast). As for the power consumption to performance ratio, it's not nearly as good as touted. TDP of 25 Watts at 2ghz. It's ok, but far from impressive these days. E-350 (AMD fusion/bobcat based cpu) has a TDP of 18 Watts, is a faster cpu and includes an HD6310 intergrated gpu (all inside the 18 watts TDP). PA6T uses more power, is slower, and doesnt include an intergrated gpu, not to mention the graphics card that is being sold with it (Radeon 4350 iirc?) is even slower than the intergrated gpu in the E-350..
Im still interested in OS4.x itself, but the harware leaves a heck of a lot to be desired.

Nah. If it was very cheap then yes possibly and that would only be for some nostagic/novelty reason.

Not sure what it would enable me to do that I can't now.

Ok run OS4 I guess, but I'm not sure what OS4 would enable me to do that I can't now :P

Who knows how true this is, but if there is any truth to it then it doesn't look too good for the X1000.

Yes, I know. I do find it odd though that there has been no news in a couple of months and A-EON seem to have stopped replying to emails.
