Internet sharing problem

I own Amiga Forever (incidently a new version has just been released).

One of the main attracions before purchasing it was the abilitity to 'share' the internet by aloowing my AMiga to access the interent through my PC's modem.

Now this has proved very difficult indeed. I have read the paultry documentation with A.F. and got no where. I have also read the few web sites which it refers to - at best I've knackered up my registry and had to completely reinstall my system.

What I am asking is - is it posiible, through a seriel cable to conect my Amiga to my PC in such a way as to allow them to share the same connection. My PC seems to have trouble communicating with my AMiga whilst attempting to dial out - it can only seem to do either one or the other.

It seems very complicating and probably isnt worth the trouble but it woul dbe coll if there is an easier way.

Thanks for your time.

It would be nice if you post your Amiga specs. I have managed to do what you want, however, i used different tools, and got nowhere close to Amiga Forever (by the way, I think they mean you can use the net through your EMULATED Amiga, but Im not sure)

I'll give a shitty explanation of my method:

Ingredients:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Amiga 600 HD (20MB), 2MB Chip RAM (x1)
Miami demo version (or better) (x1)
A few light net tools like Lynx (as many as you want)

PC (x1)
Linux, any distro/version, that has PPPD (x1)

Null-modem serial cable (x1)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Procedure:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Miami on your Amiga or any other TCP/IP stack you might have. Miami is the easiest to use. Configure it for null-modem cable (no dialing, etc)

Run PPPD on the PC. Remember to set all its parameters through the commandline (use MAN, I dont know which ones they were right now)

Now dial through Miami. It should connect. Presto, you haev internet on teh Amiga. However, to share the PC's net connection, you will have to run the proper sharing daemons on the linux PC too...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I know this explanation sucks, but there is a doc on the Aminet dealing with Amiga/PC networking, and I got my info from there.

You can do the same with Windows (like I did) just be sure to use a freeware Proxy on the PeCe to share thw INet connection (like JANA2 for example) !

Amiga Explorer WONT allow you to connect your Amiga to the net. Use whatever retroman has pointed you to, because it works

I used Linux because it was easier to set up, but I think I now have the chance to use Winblows, I have a program called Sysex or someqthing like that...

Ive give up on the idea

Because my internal modem went bust a while ago and I now have an externalmodem. And youve guessed it - I cant have my modem plugged into the pc as teh same time as teh serial cable connecting my AMiga to teh PC!

Perhaps I could just get a lead to connect the modem to teh amiga?

Ports.......

I have 1 printer port, 1 seriel=port, 2 USB ports, a 'mouse' port (round socket) a keyboard port (same) a joystick port (bigger than the seriel) and some line in / line out sockets.

It is a tiny PC.

Hmmm, in that case you should try to get a parallel-link-cable, works the same way, as the serial one, but it´s faster Then you are able to use your modem (serial) and the link to the Amiga (parallel)

Yeah perhaps........

I dont know what will be better - to buy a different lead so I can connect my modem to my AMiga or to nuy a Parellel lead to connect as you've said.

Whilst were at it do you know the cheapest mail order place to purchase such a lead - I imagine it might be difficult to obtain oone from most compuet shops?

Hmmm, you should be able to get the parallel cable in every computer shop as it is a standart one (also used for PC-2-PC connections) !

the 'lead' you are talking about to connect the modem directly
should be a simple DB9m to DB25f
they are quite common, and most pc shops should have some [they are used to connect newer serial devices [9 pin plug] to older computers [25 pin port]]
