copying files locks up Workbench...

Hi,

Having a problem on two different machines.. One is an A1200 running 3.x using IDE HD's and the other is an A2000 running 2.04 with a SCSI HD.

Any time I try to copy a large number of files from one HD partition to another, from one IDE or SCSI device to another, it ends up locking up every time at random files.

I have used Shell, Diskmaster II, Workbench drag and drop....

Is there something with the old drivers or cards or a fix that I need to resolve this because I can't believe it has not been seen over the years before...

Which filesystem?
Could it be a maxtransfer-issue?

What are the buffer sizes on the partitions? Preferably try 100 or 200 if you have the free RAM.

fFS is okay as long as you are using the correct settings for it.

Such as max transfer being 0x1Fe00

Hi,

Ok I found them in the HD Toolbox.. Can you explain just a bit, what the max transfer speed is you gave me and the difference between the default that comes up and what you posted.. also has a better file system come along for HD's I am not aware of being it has been many years now?

Thanks for the help btw

See https://wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/AmigaO...ountList_Entry for MaxTransfer. It is not a speed setting. Its a compatibility value.

It also could be too small stack. Deep directory paths can use lots of stack. There also might be "too long" directory or file name that causes overflow.

Does it still happen if you open shell, type for example "stack 100000" and then use copy command to copy files?

maxtransfer normally won't cause problems when writing only. Written data (long files and only if filesystem is not too fragmented) can get corrupted but no one notices until it is read again later

The changes I made in the HDToolbox to every drive and partition seem to be doing the job! Not one lock up since.. The most frustrating thing is it would usually corrupt a drive partition and I would have to repair it..

So far though, it seems to be working.. I went with the max file transfer recommended and the 100 buffers setting.

I am going to take a look at those two recommended file systems now as well..

Thanks for the help!

So much has changed since I was involved...
