2D Shoot Em Ups on X-Box360, PS-3, Wii…

2D Shoot Em Ups on X-Box360, PS-3, Wii…

Well. It’s been well over a year since the X-Box 360, PS-3 & Wii were released, but not a single game for these consoles has caught my eye to justify buying any of the three so far.

I’m an old-school gamer, I prefer 2D Shoot Em Ups like R-Type & Gradius, Ikaruga, Raiden, Parodius. But so far to my knowledge, none of this genre has been released on any of the 3 consoles?!
And no, all those 2D downloadable games for a 5$-10$ fee don’t count. I want a full retail game released on disc media!

So, which of the three systems has a better chance of getting 2D Shoot Em Ups to spend my hard earned money on?!

Thanks in advance.

I think this should be in Retrogaming General Discussion rather than off-topic as it's not very off-topic

EDIT: Isn't there a new version of Geometry Wars coming out for the Wii?

Yup, some great 2d'ers on there.

Picked up a DC with games for 16quid at Gamestation, spare controllers we 1p as were the VMU units. Yes, I did say 1p.

The only way you will get retro type shooters on the new machines is via their d/loadable Live content or by the Wii's Virtual Console.

If you are really aa oldschool 2D gamer you have to own a PSX, Saturn and of course the PC-Engine DUO, maybe a Dreamcast too. Then you can play ALL the classics like R-Type, Raiden, Gradius, Parodius, Radiant Silvergun, Thunderforce etc. on real media.

This VC stuff sucks, the graphics are scaled/interpolated for higher next gen resolutions. Looks awful.

Everyone needs a Dreamcast, but not for 2D shooter only. They released much more shooter classics on other consoles.

I know them, games like Gigawing rocks.

But this was the last generation of 2D shooter games. There's no R-Type, Raiden & Co.

I really hope Irem do another R-Type for the PS3.

other than that Gradius V and R-Type Final for the PS2 are worth adding to your collection if you don't have them (and Einhander for PS1 of course)

Hey....

I don't have all of those?!

I'm just about to hate DC if someone doesn't help me!

Agreed, Gradius V and R-Type Final are superb games. Also if you can get hold of Raiden III, do so (although they made a pig's ear of the PAL conversion - awful, massive borders).

This new game for the PC (and PS3 in the future probably, from what I see here and there) called Soldner-X: Himmelsstürmer looks cool:

Agree, all of the above shoot 'em ups rock

I'd like to add a few more like Cobra Command / Flying Shark / Salamander / Tiger Heli / Twin Cobra / U.N. Squadron etc to the list though...

Yeah, since this thread has remained on-topic and is really about old school 2D type shoot 'em ups (even though on next gen consoles), thread moved

Everyday shooter on the PSN is supposed to be really good, and of course there is Stardust HD.

Just about all of them have demos available to. I enjoy Stardust more on my PS3 than I did on the Amiga.

wow great thread!

i have a dreamcast sat around doing nothing!

sorry to break the thread but can i get any better connections than the original lead i got with it? (had a proper scart lead many years ago but lost it)

i'd like scart or better if possible (32" hdtv in the house)

i've heard big things about ikaruga but never got round to it some of those other games look ace but aren't some of em like mega hard jap games etc?

i'm with DamienD on some of the proper oldskool shooters!

that Pc shooter looks awesome i'll be checking that out for sure!

I have ps/2, Gradius V and R-type final both of them are great. I also played Einhander & R-Type Delta on ps1.
