Based on the majority of game music I can remember, it's David Whitaker and Allister Brimble that stick in my mind most. Speedball, Beyond The Ice Palace, Xenon, Project X, Alien Breed... Tunes that once they're in your head, they stick for the whole day.
However, my vote goes to Jochen Hippel. I had several years of owning an Atari ST before getting an Amiga, and had a lot of exposure to Hippel's music, mainly thorough demo's but also the occasional game he worked on. |

For the Amiga it must indeed be Chris Hülsbeck, I have to say it and I don't even think he's overrated - even if his later works lack "something", maybe they are not as narrow in sound and nicely low res (like an excellent pixel artist who starts painting in high res and it's just not the same level of quality).
But as for musicians in general and not only the Amiga it's Tim Follin always and forever. (he did make some tunes for the Amiga though, look at Gauntlet III for example, epicness). I like a lot of the great 16-Bit composers of old (and current) such as Hülsbeck, Brimble or (as mentioned by the previous poster) Richard Joseph who created the great music for my favourite game of all time "The Chaos Engine" and many others such as Martin Iveson who made excellent tracks for Core Design (XJ220, Blastar, Chuck Rock 2). But what I hear from Tim (mostly in the 8-Bit league) just leaves me completely in awe (both from an artistic as well as technical view). Maybe it's superior to every other video game musician in existence to this very day? Who knows. It's just sad that he never got the appreciation (or pay from the companies?) he deserved. And look at the games he made music for. And what he said in interviews. I remember one of the creators of Ecco the Dolphin for Dreamcast (Appaloosa Interactive?) who talked about Ecco being an "action adventure" and very fast paced actually but "the tranquil music didn't really fit" or something like that. That was one of the last soundtracks Tim Follin did and it's just completely amazing - also the style which contrasts other works from him (he was very adept at several instruments and tried a lot of different sounds, something you only really find among the greatest such as Akira Yamaoka etc.). That being said, the music on the Amiga platform in general was (for me and only in my opinion of course) by far the best video game music in history. I collect video game music to this day from AAA titles to indie games and while amazing things happened over the years, it's just incredible how diverse and atmospheric the music on the old Miggy was Last edited by dex; 10 January 2015 at 13:55. |

The Wright Brothers have 0 vote? I'm in shock! Also David Whittaker's votes are too low.

It has to be Ben Daglish for me, because he's the only one I've actually met in person!

Richard Joseph: from the wiki says the soundtrack for Cannon Fodder the GBA version was also nominated for a BAFTA in 2000, and is still the only small-format soundtrack to be recognised by BAFTA to this day. Have a look to his bio, he is the man.

Wish that poll was multiple answer: for me Huelsbeck, Follin and Whittaker are among the holy trinity, closely followed by Wright and Brimble

He's still in the game industry it seems, if you check his page on mobygames.com. He also made the soundtrack for this recent demo:

i still want to break a spear for Iveson: he has been able to show the world how to push limits of optimization: its in-game tunes rarely reach 100k and what he did with two voices on Wolfchild is simply phenomenal! Trying to follow its footprints for my in-game songs but is tough...
