I guess not, aren't these images "lockpicked", so that they are not protected at all anymore? (probably original source discs, before protection routines were added)

Well the other games downloadable on the Cinemaware website match disks that are already in TOSEC (and were in TOSEC before there started to offer their games there) and are just cracks, so I guess the Lords of the Rising Sun version is no different...

Surely no-one took that seriously, what with the "profitable C64 market"?

Carrier Command

Also, Lords of The Rising Sun had 2 protections, one of Rob Northern, successfully removed by Quartex, but there was a smart in-game protection that detected somehow if the protection was removed, and if so, you'd be all of a sudden (within 1 minute of gameplay in arcade mode) be visited by a hitman ninja, and you had no choice to escape and be shuriken'ed to death and amen, game over! The original never did this (I had it too, with the original you could play the awesome arcade battlescenes), the cracked version always did this, no way to play this game correctly! AFAIK, it was never successfully cracked, but is now free avail on cinemaware's website.

LZX compressor used initially a similar routine, but Jonathan Forbes told me he removed it later on, because those using a cracked version thought the software was buggy, while it was the copy protection that anonymously screwed things up, creating bad publicity.

and finally, but that's C64, The Last Ninja 2 or 3 (can't remember) had some real rude F word messages inside the binary for crackers, can't remember the wording tho'

Had an inbuilt copier. Hold down both mouse buttons whilst its loading, and a copier screen pops up that will make a backup of the game for you

Got to say, this is one of the most interesting threads I have read (on any forum). Thanks for the insight.

Never realised there was such a game of Cat and Mouse between the programers and hackers. But it wasn't all bad, at least Quertex always told us to go out and buy the original if we liked the game!

Well after all is sad to say that piracy killed the Amiga machine.

These guys (the programmers) were right after all. Just think that the Gameboy (4 grey color machine!) was supported a long time after the Amiga died. Why? Because there was no piracy at all.

Arrow Cabal (French hidden message!)

One in French for a change! Just before the Cabal copylock:

celui qui crack Cabal est un ANE...!

I'm guessing that translates to something along the lines of "If you crack Cabal you're an ARSE!"
