slim ide cd drive not recognized

Hi, trying to get a slim ide CD drive working in a 1200 with one of these buffered Compact Flash Ide adapters.

The CF card is set to master and the CD is set to slave . The CD adapter (like this) has a jumper to select master, slave, cable select. Am mounting the drive as CD0 (Devs/DosDrivers) unit 1 using scsi.device.

If I insert a cd-rom after workbench 3.1 loads the drive spins and h.disk light on 1200 flashes but no icon appears in workbench.
I also have a registered version of idefix which you can use to scan for a CD drive with atapi.device. Same - no CD device detected.
If set CD as master and CF card slave then CF card is not recognised and the 1200 doesn't boot at all.

If I attach another CF card reader to the same buffered adapter (so 2 CF drives, master & slave) that also works with no issue. So seems the buffered adapter is working ok.

I've tried switching to different makes of CF card and different CD drives. Same result - no CD getting mounted in workbench.

I'm assuming the buffered CF card adapter is one ide channel so max two devices- master/slave or unit 0, unit 1. So I don't really need idefix then. Would that be right ?

Thanks in advance

I had this setup on my A1200 with exactly the same hardware but without the buffered CF adapter I just had a normal VH.2 one, and I had them both on the same cable as master/slave, and I used IDEfix97, there is a `Find Device` program with |IDEfix so get and run and scan to see if it sees the drive, I think some Cd drives are seen with the ATAPi.device that is included with IDEFix.

Also you might have to alter the startup sequence to get it to run properly

thanks, it all worked ok by attaching a 3 way ide cable with just a plain CF adapter (unit 0 master) and the CD drive last (unit 1 slave)
with the same settings but CF card in the buffered adapter no CD icon appears on workbench.
So I conclude the CF reader on the buffered adapter is just not compatible with this CF card.

The CD Icon doesn't normally appear until you put a CD in.

Have you tried putting a CD in?

the CD drive is working fine using a simple 3 way ide cable with just a plain CF adapter instead of the buffered CF adapter. So more troubleshooting required. But will leave it for now.
Edit: If anyone else is using this particular adapter with an optical drive maybe post your setup and CF card type here thank you
