Question Upgrade from 3.1.4 using CF Card

This looks amazing, thanks for putting in all the hard work

Question, I have an A500 and an ACA500+ booting to 3.1.4 can I just upgrade using the CF card after it's booted, or do I need to go the whole emulation route-copy to card afresh?

Thanks, K

Even though we've featured AmigaOS 3.2, can it be installed over the top of another OS install while keeping all the game folders intact?

We would recommend a fresh install and then adding all the extras you may wish/require.Remember lot of old hacks are no longer required and could conflict or cause unexpected side effects.

Also if you have s 3.1.4 installation then upgrading is very easy, as long as you know what your are doing. You can still use old kickstart if your hardware supports softkicked kickstart or module upgrades like the blizzard turbo boards.

Upgrading a 3.9 system is a bit trickier, as any other old installation.
Since the OS had many expansions and you will need/wish to configure the new options and older prefs could be not fully functional.
So again, I would recommend to make a clean install, and then put all the missing things back from your old installation, this is simpler and will keep all your extra things. You ca also try a direct upgrade installation.

Are there still any components (besides HDToolbox, IconEdit, and the resource.library) that are worth taking from OS 3.9? What about colorwheel.gadget and gradientslider.gadget - were they updated?

Looking at the feature log, it feels more like OS 3.10, not OS 3.2.

The highlighters (or filetypes as i call them) are handled by a plugin but the api of that plugin is not published/finalizeed yet. However if any of you are interested in getting a head start I have no problem with telling you in private. The API will probably be fixed in a patch release. And any input 3rd party devs of such plugins might have will go into making the filetype plugin api better.
Absolutely brilliant

HDToolBox is questionable, yes it has a nicer GUI but lacks bug fixes and some features present in current one, so you have to use the new one in some cases.

IconEdit is still valid, but then again there are other tools that do the job nicely, and there are a few problems in it too, so hopefully we will have something new to work around this limitation.

resource.library might be needed for some programs, but in most cases it not required.

Everything else should be in better shape then ever.

The mindboggling thing is that the list is not even close to covering all the new features and changes. For a true picture you'ld have to look through all the 2 years worth of changelogs of every component

The dock, and the cd player are other 3.9 components you may want to copy over if you like them

The colorwheel / gradientslider were better in OS 3.9 than in 3.1.4 - that's why I mentioned them. I never liked the 3.9 dock, and I do not play audio CDs anymore (I ripped all I have).

But I'll definitely continue using the Amplifier.

[edit] It's really hard to tell much without having the OS to play. For example, there is a configurable TAB completion added to the console - but will I like it as much as KingCON? I can't tell until I try.

The gradientslider and colorwheel are the os4 versions ported back and slightly bugfixed - so definitely not the 3.1.4 versions but not the 3.9 versions either, though very likely much closer to the 3.9 version than the 3.1.4 version

Is there a way of upgrading from 3.1.4 to 3.2 and keep all (current) icon positions?

I spent a ton of time snapshoting icons and windows.

Because a 1200 doesn't support 24 bit color. HAM is already heavy enough for AGA. But you at least have lots more colours than 256. I also run MorphOS on G5 and that is pretty affordable.

That should all be in the .icon files I think? As long as you don't overwrite those

I ordered OS 3.2 right away. I am so curious, how it "feels" like, using this brand new OS. Thank you so much for your dedication, devs! <3

Would it be possible backport GUI for Roadshow even though Roadshow is not part of the AmigaOS3.x (yet)?

Kickstart screen

I have stuck with Kickstart 3.1 ROMs in my A1200 because I didn't want to lose the authentic Amiga tick logo on the boot screen. The 3.1.4 ROMs replaced that with a huuuuuuuuge boing ball.

I'm guessing these new ROMs will have the oversized boing ball screen. If so, should I keep my 3.1 ROMs, or is it really time to move on and install new physical 3.2 ROMs? The 3.2 notes do seem to recommend the switch.

I know that the boot screen is seldom seen, but I do have a removable SD card, so can pop it out to see the boot screen and load floppies, which is highly nostalgic for me from my original Amiga days.

Perhaps in the future the newer ROMs can use the tick logo? - although I realise that's probably down to several hundred lawyers fighting it out to the death.

You can use your Kick 3.1 ROM but have to reboot the machine once to load all the new Modules. It is better to use the new Roms to have all the improvements which it brings. The new bootmenu the new scsi.device the neu intuition.library the new mechanism to update modules automaticaly and so on......
