Amiga mod

Note: I have done real damage to my machine during this process - I don't recommend connecting the wiring in my cowboy style! This was intended to be a quick test to see if it was worth implementing in a proper way. But when it worked.. I got lazy and left loose cabling inserted in the port. I'll be getting a male plug for this port and wiring to that instead.

I found some LED strips in the attic that the missus had got for our wedding and I've put them under the window sill and under the back of the A1200 - powered by one of the ports at the back.

I love the outcome and I think it gives it a nice presentation and a sense of an aura around it

Thanks voyager_1701e. The 6th is my favourite shot too - I'm surprised at it considering the camera isn't so good on this phone for indoor shots.

Nice handle! I've finished TOS, am on season 7 of TNG and season 2 of DS9. Vogayer is next on my list.

Everything locksmith. Absolutely everything!

IMO, it makes it look very cool by creating a halo effect around the machine. But the pics don't convey that unfortunately.

As per your other thread where this has taken an unfortunate twist, you have to ask yourself why didn't you power the LEDs with a separate PSU?

The whole point was to avoid using batteries or an additional supply. When I reconnect this, it will be via a proper adapter for the port where the pins will be the correct length for safe operation.

I think it looks quite groovy. A good mod

Have you not thought of opening your miggy up and soldering the connections on the inside of the port? It'll look nice and tidy then.

Thanks LuMan! I considered it, but I'm worried that I might have difficulty undoing the modification - or worse, that I'll short something else A male connector (just the head, no cable) shouldn't be visible from the users POV.. although it may block some of the light. Maybe I could use shielded crocodile clips internally though.. you've given me an idea!

Me too It was just a test - not intended to be left that way. But after two weeks of it working fine I just left it. Then one day the lights went out because a resistor had fallen out. When I pushed it back in, I went too far and caused the short Not a good memory, but a good lesson!

Whilst I too shudder at that second picture, the lighting has put some ideas in my head, although I suspect I will try some of the pc case lights that are just run off a Molex and power them from inside the case. I wonder if some blue ones would look cool under the vents ?

Something like this: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/PC-Case-LED-3...-/301439733601

Depends on the colour of your setup. I associate Amiga with blue, grey and white (never knew about the boing ball back in the day!). Do post pics if you do it.

Alternatively, the one I have came with a remote control and has every colour in the RGB spectrum: http://www.adverts.ie/ceiling-lights...remote/9373661
it's not molex though and the receiver would need to have line-of-sight to the remote.

Yeah something like that. If I do it it will be to my gaming a1200 not my main one, as the gaming one even has a Molex connector going spare inside off the back of the power connector.
Off course there will be pics of I do it, and you will be credited as inspiration!
Wont get to it till Xmas though...

Why, thank you! I wish I'd thought of going straight off the power connector. I'd rather have shorted out the PSU alone instead of PSU+mobo+floppy drive

See my blog on amibay if you want to see a close up of how it was done, although not by me I hasten to add.

Ah, I see. Very nice - they're exactly the clips I imagined I need. I may order some of those

Another way to go, if anyone wants to do a similar project, is to get something like this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/textile-leds-5pk-blue-n32dd

This is only 1 example of many. I remember making loads of electronic projects in my college days, using the conventional 'bulb' type LEDs. Then we went all funky with the rectangular ones. Now there's all manner of LED solutions. I may be tempted to pimp out one of my Miggies...

Cool. They look like good even when they're not lit up!

I was going to put a light under the keyboard but changed my mind when I remembered my HP laptop does the same and it actually makes the letters harder to see because they aren't transparent. I may do the entire bottom perimeter of my 1200 though and give it a proper halo effect.

I'm also working on a model Enterprise 1701-D

Further to my post about the molex off the PSU connector - see the latest post on my blog with pics of how TheCorfiot has done this on my new board.
It has worked out really well for what i wanted being honest.
