[WIP] Pengo conversion
Another project taking shape: Sega 1982 Pengo
Never really ported properly except on megadrive & maybe C64. This time, this is a 1:1 arcade port using of course the original Z80 code that I reverse-engineered & transcoded to 68000. The vid is a bit short, sorry about that, Lagarith is giving me wrong colors, I used intel YUV which is OK but for some reasons stops after 1 minute... I could play the first level (difficulty is set to max, didn't handle dip switches properly yet) and complete it, played second level. No sounds yet but no9 agreed to remake the tunes so it's gonna be glorious! I started this project in 2010 after Bagman SDL Windows remake, wanting to do Pengo on SDL/Windows, but got tired of it. I dug out the work that I had one with the reverse-engineered code and it was really good specially in the A.I. section (the only part that interested me at the time). I tried to RE the game more, specially the mundane sections like text display, etc.. and something was running pretty quickly after converting to 68000 using my z80268k tool (like done for Galaxian). Known also as Petch on C64, and as you say - this game was never properly ported. Looking forward.

I remember seeing someone getting several free credits from Kung Fu Master with the quick switch off/on technique.
Probably also very healthy for the boards ![]() |

You're at it again! Looking fantastic and a really cool game to port, I am not even sure there was ever an official port of this on any 16 bit systems either.

I could even have ripped the 68000 code directly from the 1:1 port but I'm more familiar with MAME asset rips (with the help of Mark) & z80 Tested it back in the days, but to me not Pengo enough. |

Wet himself? Lol you see evil everywhere. I think he just stumbles 50% chance when walking out of a level.

Nice ideas but those aren't my plans
![]() Then I don't know. I have Galaga 88 X68000 reversed but it could really be a challenge. Donkey Kong is going to happen probably (Mark is working on it). Maybe do Bagman properly, GalAGA, Phoenix, ... And FINAL FIGHT (just joking ![]() |
