Question Hardcore

Did this Digital Illusions game ever see the light of day, or was it nothing more than a bunch of screen shots?
I know it says it was unreleased, but maybe a version slipped out somewhere?

I tried looking for some information on this game as I thought it looked pretty good. Unfortunately trying to find any information on the internet without extremely limiting the search terms comes up with piles and piles of irrelevant information (if you know what I mean).

Shame, as this actually looks pretty good.

Yeah that would be pretty sweet if any kind of demo could be found.

I'm pretty sure The One magazine did a preview of sorts (ie: 1/2 a page or so at least), at the time, but it just seemed to quietly disappear off the radar like several other titles did for the same reason after Commodore's demise. Can't recall to much about it,but think their comments at the time were describing it in the same tones as a Turrican-esque game in terms of quality.

I clearly remember that screenshot from magazines... shame I threw out my 'The One' collection a while ago :/

What's aGTW, if one may inquire?
In any case, good luck with that. Even if no software is available, it would be interesting to find out what happened to this game and maybe even find out why it never got released.

Yep, I just think it was shelved during production, much like the game Tentacle by Eldritch the Cat. A rolling slideshow of the latter was shown on an ST mag disk. Oh and the mods of Tentacle were released on Tim Wright's homepage - http://www.coldstorage.org.uk

Found two interviews with Andreas Axelsson (AXL) (one of the founders of Digital Illusions) in which he also commented on why 'Hardcore' wasn't released:

http://www.lemonamiga.com/interviews/andreas_axelsson/

Quote:
Once you had done Pinball Dreams done, was it easy to get the other games published?

After Dreams, it was quite easy to get Fantasies and Illusions sold. 21st Century pretty much begged us to do them. Benefactor was harder, although not too hard since Psygnosis recognized some of the success of Lemmings in it. HardCore was moved from Amiga to MegaDrive and then canned with only two known bugs left to fix. Psygnosis shut down their 16 bit development overnight, that absolutely sucked. I still bring out the ROM image sometimes to play it. I believe we could put it out for download, but last time I looked at it the contract with Psygnosis still held us back.

Malfunction was canned, 'cause I got bored with it. It would have been a little like System Shock on the PC if it had been finished. Benefactor was released for Amiga and CD32 and Hardcore was almost finished for Sega Megadrive, but was canned byt the publisher when 16-bit suddenly died overnight.
Quote:
Additionally I can say that Hardcore would've kicked major ass if it had been released on the Megadrive. It was the best shoot-em up ever on that machine. I'd buy a Megadrive today, solely to play that game if we could get it on a cartridge.

The unreleased Mega Drive version. Looks indeed very nice. We need a ROM dump.
