Amiga Revitalised For 2011!
Hey guys just thought I would share my joy of getting my Amiga back up and running after some tweaking!
It started shortly after Christmas, where I decided the keys of my Amiga 500 Plus were pretty yellow. So I ordered some H202 from the Internet [35%] after trawling through eBay ads and finally managing to find an auction that wasn't banned due to an "impending court case from France". I got some Vanish Oxi from the supermarket, a UV bulb from Maplins, and I was set! Here is the Amiga with my newly acquired RAM upgrade, as you can see the keys are pretty yellow [they were actually worse than the picture indicates] I began removing the keys very gently with a screwdriver, making sure that I didn't lose any of the springs! I noticed most people remove ALL of their keys when retr0briting, however I decided not to, the brown keys look about the right colour to me, even though I must admit I found it quite appealing the grey colour they can go when met with some H202 and Oxy! After around 16 hours in H202 and Oxy under a 15W UV lamp next to the fire, the keys are their natural colour. What a way to celebrate Christmas But it was not over yet. In the midst of all the retr0briting I decided to treat myself to some extra memory. Y'know... 1Mb in 2011 just didn't seem enough. No I needed MORE. So I purchased 2 memory expansions for my Amiga. The first being, the 1Mb ChipRAM expansion shown in the picture above, and the second being 4Mb extra FAST RAM, in the form of the Alcomp A504: http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/a504. This would give me a total of 6Mb memory in my 500 Plus! Fit for 2011? Definitely And as you can see, Workbench picks up the 4Mb no problem But that was not quite everything. I decided my Amiga setup looked a bit untidy. So I managed to track down an original Amiga 500/+ Workstation. After much fiddling I think it now looks pretty neat and my disks will now be less likely to be corrupted from being too close to the monitor speakers. The only problem is some of the paint is peeling so a respray may be on the cards, but I will save that for another time But on the whole I'm sure you will agree the Amiga is looking much healthier now for the new year than it did previously. Hi:
Very nice A500. About the keys, for next time (retrobright doesn't last so much as a new white keyboard) I'll tell you what you have to do: you take out the rear screws (a lot) and you retrobright the keys that are over the black plastic, all joined. When it's finished you can put it even under the water (I do). Then you use a hairdryer for enough time to not let a drop and that's all. What I do too is to use some "Pronto" (spray wax for furnitures) and you clean it all again making sure you don't let a drop of water so the springs won't get rusty. That's all. Well, all that I say about the rear screws on the keyboard is in my A1200, but I suposse it has to be the same in yours. Last edited by Retrofan; 04 January 2011 at 19:31. |

Do you have a link to the Philips LCD TV model? (Does it have a good picture?)

It's difficult to tell from those photos, I think. And in the Amiga flatscreen world, you often have to choose the lesser of n evils, since every single screen has some issue. If it looks close to my Joytech LCD in 640x256, I'll be quite happy with that. Doesn't look like SuperHires to me, btw.

You are indeed correct, it is HiRes Interlace, I use that because the fonts look better and not as "narrow".
However I can assure you that SuperHiRes works absolutely fine and flicker free on my LCD TV. Here is a photograph I've just taken: |
