Pimp your Workbench!

Hi all!

I've not been around for a while, and having installed Workbench 3.1 on a HDF in WinUAE I've forgotten all the cool stuff to install to, well, literally 'pimp my Workbench'.

Can anyone list all the tools that they use (perhaps with a link to Aminet?) to get their Workbench looking and acting more modern and up to date? Anything welcome, be it graphical or functional!

Better just look for a package with the programs pre-installed.
AmiKit seems a good choice, here's the link http://amikit.amiga.sk

Just humour me I like to do things from scratch, great feeling of accomplishment.

Thanks for the link anyway, I'll have to check it out.

Edit : I checked it out, but unfortunately 'Workbench 3.1 is NOT supported!'. I only own WB3.1

I know you've said you like to do things from scratch (which I totally understand) but ClassicWB by Bloodwych is the best option available IMHO.

See project.ClassicWB section for more details

From the top of my head...
VisualPrefs
MCP
Birde
ToolManager
NewIcons
GlowIcons
FullPallete
SysPatch
FBlit
Titleshadow

That's a good way to start
You'll find them on www.aminet.net

I second DamienD's opinion about ClassicWB.

Also if you install it, look around what's on it and check what tools you find useful. Then either ask Bloodwych or post question here on forum.

Also Paul's tutorial has most of needed tools to start with.

I remember seeing a guide called "This Old Workbench" but it's offline, but the wayback machine looks like it has the old site archived

http://www.amigau.com/amigarealm/thi.../contents.html - wayback machine mirror

Edit - site working ok

Thanks for all the help, I'll check some of these out.

Although I see I can get AmigaOS 3.9 for a bit under £40. Can anyone who has it say if it's a worthwhile investment?

unless you got a gfx card (and in truth most cases even if you do) go for OS 3.5 its cheaper for one and has a smaller footprint.

If you want all the yummyness of a modern OS then lump in linux and use a emulator to run the old software (there wont be much slowdown on native hardware... infact hardly noticable)

Send a message via MSN to alkis21
Taskbar and Daemon Tools (with their Prefs Editor) are very essential tools.

If you find out the name, let me know. I'm using PowerSnap which only lets you copy monospaced text to clipboard. I've been looking for something to copy ANY text - including text not in monospaced font.

mmh, powersnap was what I meant. You are right though, I remember it only works with monospaced fonts. My mistake

I did a PDF with all the Articles and an index. It's all very informative, I though it to be well worth it!

I've been trying to use newedit, but I didn't figure how it actually work. Anyone had had any experience with it?
Ps- it helps copying over some selectors where it usually wouldn't be allowed to
