FIRE & ICE vs SUPERFROG - WHICH IS BEST?
Hi everyone and welcome to the May 2018 edition of the "Which Is Best?" series.
Last month I placed the two Amiga Chaos Engine games against asking you which in your minds was the better game and after counting all the votes I can now reveal the original Chaos Engine (suprise suprise) is the winner gaining 56 votes with Chaos Engine 2 receiving,...wait for it,....2 votes! I don't think it's a case that Chaos 2 was a really bad game, I think it's more the fact that Chaos 1 was just a perfectly programmed game and set a bar so high that a sequel would always struggle to reach the same heights,...nonetheless it was a hammering! This month I'm going to place the Amiga classics "Fire & Ice" and "Superfrog" games against each other, 2 great run and collect platformers, which game do you think is better?!,...only your votes will determine that VOTING CLOSES 15th June 2018. Superfrog. Fire & Ice is a little more slow paced.

Fire n Ice.
Whilst its not quite as technically adept as Superfrog in the scrolling department, I just find platformers where you rush around everywhere less statisfying, as its so easy to miss stuff, which then means you need to slow down, which isn't what Superfrog/Sonic is all about. |

I think Fire & Ice winds hands down, it has better graphics quality, sound, music, and level design. It's a bit more advanced on the technical side as well, with a bit of parallax scrolling, and its pseudo physics and game elements.
Superfrog does have 50 FPS scrolling, but it seems they sacrificed a lot just to build the whole game around that, and it doesn't work well because of how most levels are designed. Through much of the game you only get to sprint for a brief second before you have to stop and dodge stuff. They should definitely have looked to Sonic for how to design levels around fast scrolling and game play. |

If I had to choose one, Fire & Ice, but I'm not really a massive fan of either.
I found Superfrog so dull and derivative sadly. |

I can't be the only person who thinks Superfrog is an awful game with terrible controls? I really don't understand the admiration it has. Fire and Ice vote from me!

It would have to be Fire and Ice. Superfrog was OK but just too simplistic & easy.

Are you kidding?
SuperFrog is far better, the gameplay is just perfect. I've completed it back then and it is excellent. Fire&Ice, too sluggish |

Gameplay is far from perfect, the character is uncontrollable, and level design is poor. They forcefully injected speed into it to "be like Sonic" with levels and gameplay elements that do NOT align with the speed the character can get. It turns the game into a pile of poop. Sure, your frog can run fucking fast at 50FPS, but did it need to? Definitely not. What's the use of speed if you can't, like in Sonic, run through a level at breakneck speeds because the level has been designed with speed in mind? Fire & Ice is the more mature, better designed game, hands down. You can actually play and feel like you are in control, it has plenty of secrets to discover, exploration is well rewarded. The graphics and music are very cool too, while Superfrog looks bland and boring. |

Fire and Ice. Technically is impressive and the music is top quality. IIRC the high score music (or was the end game music) was awesome.
