Problems using HD images on real Hardware
Hi all
I have a strange problem, hope someone can help me. I want to prepare a 32GB microSD card to use on my A4000 with Cyberscsi and a BlueSCSI device, I can create and partition a 28GB hard disk image on FSUAE, partition it, format it and copy data to the new created hard disk partitions, all was fine, I can see all files in the partition, but when I put the microSD on the Amiga 4000 the partition is empty, nothing on it, if i put the microSD again in my computer and start again the emulator, here it is, the partition and all the information inside it. And, another thing is that in the emulator some partitions are not formatted, but, in fact, they are formatted and in the 4000 I can see them perfectly. Anybody knows what is happening? Regards |

Sounds like the classical 4GB problem. Your UAE config does not match the Amiga config. Different controller, different Kickstart, different other harddrives. One of the two, probably the real Amiga, has the 4GB problem, the other not.
Make sure you use a file system which is able to see more than 4GB. SFS, PFS3, FFS V43+. Do not use FFS V40 or below. Make sure that the file system is properly installed in HDToolbox and properly assigned to each partition with the correct identifier, both in the file system section (Add/Update) and the partition section (Change) of HDToolbox. |

Both, real A4000 and emulated 4000, use the same .hdf, PFS3 last version formated and with Amiga OS 3.2.1 and 3.1 Kickstart ROM, so it must work in both machines. Regards |

The fact that you are using uaehf.device on fsuae could bring problems. Try to setup the hd from scratch in hdtoolbox on real machine. Be sure to remove and re-add the drive config, the partition scheme and filesystems then boot that microSD in fsuae and copy things over.

The setup is not the same. The hard drive - when using FS-UAE - is connected to the UAE HD controller (which I believe works better with > 2GB (or >4 GB) partitions by default).
Use something like hard_drive_0_controller = scsito connect the drive to the SCSI controller instead to better match your real computer. I think this will automatically connect it to the Cyberstorm SCSI controller if you've added the Cyberstorm expansion in FS-UAE (I'm not 100% sure since it's long ago that I touched this area of FS-UAE). |

Thanks for the help
I start again from zero, I formatted and partitioned the SD on my real Amiga 4000, all was fine, i can format the 7 partitions without problems and copy my AmigaOS backup to my DH0: boot partition, try to boot the Amiga 4000, all was Ok. Now i put the microSD on my Mac, start the emulation with the hard_drive_0_controller = scsi flag and it does not boot, I boot from another .hdf and I can see that the microSD in the emulator has 5 partitions uninitialized, only DH0: and DH1: show in Workbench, If I open DH0:, its empty, nothing on it, but this partition has a bootable OS3.2 on my real A4000 So, any other ideas? Regards |

If in the real Amiga's report you compare the partitions section with the DOS devices section, you'll see that in the partition table MaxTransfer is set to 1fe00 while in the DOS table it is ffffff. That's ok for SCSI devices but it might be problematic for IDE devices. I don't know how the BlueSCSI device works. But I know that those Acard SCSIDE in the very early days had a MaxTransfer issue. They probably translated SCSI commands 1:1 into IDE commands. But the relevant SCSI commands READ(10) and WRITE(10) have a two-byte transfer length field while IDE commands have only one byte. So with SCSI you can request 65536 sectors at once while IDE can only handle 256 sectors in one go. This means the SCSI-IDE translator might have to split one SCSI command into many IDE commands to fulfill the request. If the firmware does not do this correctly, the transfer is cut off and data is corrupted. Another thought is alignment. You use 7 heads and 256 sectors which means a cylinder has 917504 bytes. 7 is a rather odd number in the world of powers of two. You better use 8 heads and 256 sectors, then partitions start at megabyte boundaries. |
