Walker (Psygnosis) Platform Levels

After purchasing Amiga Forever and adding some of my favourite games I came to the classic Psygnosis game Walker. Now I remember reading reviews about this game before it was released and could have sworn it was to have platform levels, probably just to give the player a break for all the blasting. When I finally bought the game I can’t remember ever seeing those platform levels.

Nearly twenty years later I decided to see if I dreamt the whole thing up, so I searched the Amiga Magazine rack and came across the very articale I read all those years ago. It was a preview from the One http://amr.abime.net/issue_330 pages 36 to 38. it clearly shows two screenshots from a platform section. However, it was a whole year before the game was released so it was probably dropped for some unknown reason. Still one of the best shooters on the Amiga despite the omission!!!

Does anybody know why the platform levels never made it to the finished game?

I've always wondered about this, presumably the platform levels either were taking longer to complete or simply weren't considered to be good enough. Do they survive in any playable form?

I have found some more scanned pictures from early Walker development.
In my opinion those platform sections took to long to make them play well, so dev team decide to cut them out and resale game on time. I believe if each time zone have to had that platform levels whole game would be released at least year later. Still I like idea of game when You have those two sections, each equal fun, one in big robot and one on foot. It's like two games in one, each one must be well designed, or that part will drag down gameplay other part.

The review above says the sections were "removed last minute", I wonder if they are to be found somewhere in someone's backups and could be resurrected!

Great find and intresting read. Agree that Walker is a great shooter, but these additional levels might have given a nice bit of variation to the gameplay. Like the landing/walking sections in Parallax.

Walker is a nice game and I played it much back in time. Nevertheless, I always found it too much repetitive .

Would really appreciate if the platform levels could be made available .

@Goldrunner : Thank you for this thread !

Now that you mentioned it... yes . But at that time we had good reflexes . So maybe it is even harder now (as many other games) .

There was going to be a Walker 2 at one point so maybe removing the platforming sections from the original was partly done to allow extra scope for evolution in the sequel. Of course it never happened so it's a bit of a moot point.
