The last big box purchase I made on or around release day was probably Worms Directors Cut in 1997 and before that Chaos Engine 2 about 1996.
I've bought many games since as recently as last week but the OP meant games you purchased on or near the original release date. |

Would be either Worms DC or AB3DII for me (I forget which was released last). They were both amazing designs and lovely high-quality glossy packages. The nostalgia!

I've never, ever, actually owned a real Amiga game. Back in the day it was all about piracy, since we didn't even have game shops. Later on I was always moving too much to do any sort of collecting. Even with my recent retro-bug, I've decided to buy only ZX/Amstrad tapes, Amiga big boxes are too pricey. But when I saw these two on my local site I knew I will be winning this auction. GoldBox was always my favourite CRPG series, I still consider it the best out there. It'd be nice to have the whole lot (I think there was 9 of them) but they really cost big bucks (for me), and are rather rare so wil have to stick with these two. |

You must be almost unique there. I had a lot of pirate games but I also had a lot of originals too. There must be an opposite guy to you - who never had any pirate games and just bought originals I just bought Shadow Fighter and Gloom on CD32. I'm looking for a very good condition Dungeon Mater and Gods for A500 too. But they seem to be very expensive on Ebay. I had both of these games but they aren't in very good condition. |

New guy here :)
Hello, all, just happened to somehow run into this awesome site, still reading a bit to catch up!
I'm constantly on nostalgic trips, and the Amiga is holder of my fondest memories. I think the last boxed game I bought was Champions of Krynn. That had a very interesting, six-degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon story behind it, and so it sticks in my mind. I was born and lived in Mexico for 23 years dating back to the mid '70s, and computers were difficult to purchase there. We visited the border towns often and then eventually frequented San Antonio for most of my last few years there (until I moved to California then Houston). I remember seeing Champions of Krynn in an Electronics Boutique store in a San Antonio mall... back shelf, maybe 2 shelves, with mostly Sierra games, Secrets of the Silver Blades, and Champions of Krynn. I had recently started reading the Dragonlance novels, so the choice was obvious (and knowing now about how everyone feels about the Silver Blades game, I'm glad I made the right choice). However, I had no money at that point in time, and living in Mexico, it would've cost some money to take it across the border as a declared export. Through an acquaintance of our family, we found this guy that had a sort of... import/export company in Houston, and he took orders for games and eventually they made it to Mexico. Well, this guy disappeared for years, and we couldn't get a hold of him or his "company". I considered the game lost. But a couple of years later, I ended up visiting a friend of a friend of a friend to look at the Amiga games he had just gotten. Not sure how my Champions of Krynn story came up, but he stopped me suddenly and asked if I had ever ordered that game from some dude in Houston. It turned out that the dude in Houston was friends with this guy, and he didn't have any record as to where that game was supposed to go, and had left the game in this guy's hands months ago. And sure enough, it had my name on a post-it, still shrink-wrapped. I don't know why, but to this day that game was my most treasured one... until my dad decided to give away my Amiga and all the games I had to someone without asking me, but that's a story for another day. |

Xtreme Racing (what a pile of shit!), The Shadow of the Third Moon (ok-ish, but nowhere near Comanche) and Sixth Sense Investigations (entertaining, but prone to crashes).
At that time, I already had a capable PC. But I still monitored the Amiga market for exclusives like this. Though honestly, even these three made it obvious it wasn't worth much more attention |
