Advice on memory upgrades please
My 7th post and my 3rd question.
I have a bog standard 1200 with a newly aquired 4gig HD. To be honest I am not bothered about my 1200 being all singing all dancing I just want to be able to play the majority of games via WHDLoad. So what would be a cost effective memory upgrade for me? I have looked on AmigaKit.com and they have Blizzard 1230-IV SCSI KIT for 59.99 and 32MB SIMM (BLIZZARD 1230) for 14.99. I would like to pay as little as possible so is 75 quid about as cheap as it gets other than finding a bargain on Ebay? |

If you only intend to use it for gaming a 1230 with 32mb-64mb is the max you will EVER need for WHDload gaming & still have some overhead room left IMHO
Recomendations on which 1230 is your only question next |

You obviously need an A1230-IV Blizzard accelerator before you can get the Amikit "Blizzard 1230-IV SCSI KIT" it's just the addon, not the accelerator itself.

Doh, cheers AlexH. 90 quid for the accelerator with 32meg on board. I think I'll watch Ebay for a bit.

The scsi kit is an add-on for the 1230 accelerator card.
The 1230 card has a beefed-up CPU processor on it, you don't really need this for whdload. All you need is a card with a bit or memory on it, for example something like this one currently on ebay. It's got 8mb which is fine but you could get away with one that has only 4mb for whdload. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Amiga-1200-Acc...QQcmdZViewItem Don't worry if the FPU slot is empty. You don't need an FPU. |

I had a card with 4 MB fast Ram: your A1200 will double its speed and you'll be able to play the majority of games via WHDLoad.
But now I've a Blizzard 1230-IV with 16 MB and I couldn't live without it. Get it if you can. |

As I,m sure eveyone else has spotted there is currently a shortage of "new" unused Amiga 1200 accelerators on the market..the useal suppliers vesalia,Power Computing etc have NONE advertised for sale........& the newer "Amikit" only has the the 50hz Blizzard mkIV on sale.
The Standard cheaper 1230 33 & 40hz boards seem to all have been sold.....so if your buying second hand you are more likely to buying one of these "old" highly used board's. So unless another member knows of a "run" being put together of the slower but perfect for gaming cheaper accelerators, you could be in for a long wait |

There is never going to be another run of another A1200 accelerator unless something comes of the Coldfire work that is being done... and with it's general incompatibility I doubt it will.
The only other thing that might happen are some 100MHz 060 boards, but that requires a full re-design (with SDRAM) and a good supply of E41J (Rev6) MC68060's! |

I've had a blizzard 1230IV with 32mb in my miggy for a while now (also with a 4gb HDD) and it's the best amiga experience I've ever had. It runs flawlessly, never crashing or anything so I'd recommend a blizzard all the way.
50Mhz may be a little excess for running whdload games but it's worth it if you can't find a slower accelerator or don't mind spending the cash. I use my a1200 solely for running whdload games (from the usuable Arcade Game Selector menu) and it's a blast. Good luck with whatever purchase you make. |

I have an Apollo 40mhz 1230 which runs like a charm with a 32mb simm attached to it. Sure beats the buggy MTec 25mhz card I had. I wouldn't recommend that one... but it could be mine was a bit broken. Maybe I'll buy a Blizzard 50mhz 1230/4 someday... who knows.
