Problems with Amiga Explorer

I've been trying to transfer the initial files for amiga explorer with the "Type SER: to RAM:Setup" command and I just cannot get it to work at all. I keep getting the "Can't open SER" error no matter what. I have triple checked the wiring of the null modem and the serial settings on the amiga as well as have tried using both a different null modem and usb-serial adapter and nothing is working.

I'm running workbench 1.3 off a harddrive taken right out of a school environment (so definitely not a fresh install).

I have both serial.device in devs and Port-Handler in L.

Kickstart 34.5. Amiga 2500.

You should probably use Amiga Test Kit to test the serial port. But you'll need to make a serial loopback dongle to be able to perform the test.

What is the null modem cable you are using? It needs to be a 7-wire one, not a 2-wire one.

I use a Female DB23 to Female DB9 Null Modem Adapter, and a RS232 Serial USB Adapter - as described at:

Also, try doing a simple 'echo test' to see if your serial and null modem setup is working:

Did you remember to set the correct serial port speed, stop bits, and handshake protocols up in Workbench 1.3 preferences first and then on the PC side?

See https://www.amigaforever.com/kb/13-105 for the required null modem cable wiring. Avoid using a standard PC cable as Amiga serial ports have some non-standard pins connected on the db25 connector that can damage your Amiga if used incorrectly.

See the amiga explorer troubleshooting guide https://www.amigaforever.com/kb/14-109
