Motorola 56000 DSP.
Hi.
It seems this could also be used for maths functions? I was wondering why they didn't add this to a accelerator card and patch the math libraries for the Amiga. In a ST Format DSP programming tutorial, they mention it speeds up fractal calculations. Was kind of wondering why they didn't release a blizzard 1220/4 with a 56k DSP on it. Thanks guys. |

The Delfina Flipper has a 56002 and it was used to speed up math functions, just MP3 and some environmental effects as I recall. The A3000+ was supposed to have an AT&T DSP3210, unfortunately this was never released.

Read this thread and be amazed at just how effective the dsp can be at maths:

I actually have a couple of 56001 DSPs and always wanted to interface one to the Amiga. Given they have internal PROGRAM and DATA RAM as long as the "application" is small enough to fit in 512 words external components are very limited.
Does anyone know if there is SW to support them? I believe the Linux kernel has drivers for the DSP but no real "applications". |

@PR77 might be best asking how the Atari Falcon community handles them since they've got more experience at using them for things other than audio by the look of it.

@PR77: ST Format has a tutorial on programming them, I've only read the first two so far. Last edited by redblade; 02 August 2018 at 02:40. Reason: Added reply to PR77 |

I would say there is a demand as the price is so high. I think everyone would welcome a new DSP equipped sound card, which is what many were hoping we were getting with the Primsa Megamix. Many were disappointed that it was limited to just MP3 decoding and not a general purpose AHI/DSP card. |

There's a bunch of resources about them here:

It was an amazing chip in 1993. There must be faster versions around these days
Seems it topped out at 250 mhz in 2010. |

Musashi5150: When did you buy the falcon and how much?? I got those tutorials from the ST format site so there are a few more. I'm glad enthiusiasts upload the tutorial parts of the magazines. It's a shame that amr.abime.net isn't complete with the tutorials, maybe in the future |

skolman_mws. That's some fast JPEG loading. I guess it helps having a chunky display. I used to use PPshow on my Amiga 1200 to view pictures, took a bit of a while. It's good to see that the DSP speeds up calculations for the JPEG. That's a nice shoot em up as well.

1700 Euro at the moment for a Atari Falcon. I don't know who has that kind of money. I know Amiga hardware is also very expensive BUT once Chucky starts releasing those A1200 knock offs with hardware patches . But if some one starts building a A1200 expansion with a Motorola DSP I'm interested Last edited by redblade; 07 August 2018 at 02:41. Reason: 1700 Euro for a Atari Falcon 030 14MB RAM |

Aren't there any FPGA recreations of Falcon's?

I’m glad I got my falcon before the prices went totally insane. Amibay or Atari-forum are still far better places to get a Falcon than eBay.

The Motorola 56000 only has a 24 bit address bus, does that mean it can only address upto 16MiB of ram?
There's the DSP56303, which is a 100Mhz binary compatible version costing ~£31, but it's end-of-life and that 422 in stock might be all there is. https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/product...gnal-processor There's other DSP choices which aren't end of life. Something like the TMS320C6711D can do full single precision floating point operations, runs at 250MHz and is only £22.79 https://www.digikey.co.uk/product-de...843-ND/1670149 |
