Thanks Alex, picking your brains a bit further if that's ok - what is an acceptable bit-rate do you think?

And you can change the screen size etc in XBOX media center, my PSP films look pretty good on my standard TV when I use the Xbox and you can stick a lot of MP4 films on a DVD

I've not had much luck with mkv. I encoded some dvd's at a recommended settings ( lower actually) with handbrake. I got sound and subtitles in mplayer but no picture, and sound and picture in dvdplayer but no subtitles! Using t3ch's last stable release. What's the secret?

I always used the x264 XBOX profile in MeGUI whenever I encoded x264/AAC MKV or MP4 movies.
I said used because there's really no point in using x264, Xvid/AC3 is a much better choice for the good old XBOX. Xvid 720p looks and runs sweet (1280x544), 1280x720 can be a little choppy but it's still watchable. |

Just got some MP4 files and they are very choppy/jerky on the Xbox through XBMC so what is the best thing to do with the files...?
I have the software "Any Video Converter" so I was going to convert the files to AVI - is that the best thing to do in these circumstances? Last edited by Peter; 15 January 2011 at 16:29. |

Thanks Retroplay - I will have a play with MeGUI as "Any Video Converter" doesn't seem too configurable.

MeGui isnt very streamlined. Give Staxrip a shot if it gives you trouble.

OK, picking your Brains even further... I am still working with Any Video Converter software trying to convert a MKV file to AVI - I must be a bit thick because although I have read the Wiki guide to XBMC I am still a bit confused about the best video settings for AVI playback via XBMC....
What from your experience (aimed at anyone!) would be the best video settings (see picture) for an AVI conversion here... the conversion process takes a long time on my computer so if anyone can give me an idea of what setting would produce the best picture on the Xbox I would be grateful for the advice... |

in regards to 1280x720 playback, even better than xvid is divx or ffmpegs mpeg4 codec for example. this is because unlike xvid, you can set a maximum bitrate.
i do something like mencoder -oac copy -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=5000:vrc_maxrate=5000:vrc_buf_size=4096 infile.mkv -o outfile.avi which will play without dropping frames on 1280x720p video. The charts on the xbmc4xbox wiki are also out of date. you can do slightly higher bitrates with h264 than it states - also newer h264 will only okay on the dvdplayer player, as the built in mplayer is rather out of date. |

Another nice output is using handbrakecli. You can use a gui as well. I use linux but commands should be exactly the same. This is from a DVD source: (I rip the DVD to HD first)
HandBrakeCLI -i '/media/disk2/dvd/THE_MATRIX/' -o /media/disk2/Matrix.mp4 -t 1 -C 2 -f mp4 -e ffmpeg -b 2000 -r 25 -a 1 -E lame -B 200 -6 dpl2 -R 48 -D 4.0 --loose-anamorphic Takes about 40 mins tops on a P4 3.4ghz with 1.5gig of ram Quick easy and a superb picture I doubt you will beat easily. Above options -t = track number. -a = audio track you want to rip from DVD |

it also depends on wich revision/build of XBMC you are using, i hadn't updated for a very long time and newer encoded stuff played choppy or stuttered until i upgraded to the latest version of XBMC wich is still being improved to this day.

here is an example 720p video that the xbox can play back without skipping
http://malus.exotica.org.uk/~buzz/eab/ I used my example commandline above - and im sure you could increase the quality further, but it's ok as an example. |
