The Black Cauldron - game versus movie

Right on the cusp of the A500's arrival the game of the movie of a series of books was released. I think for that reason it's thought of more as a DOS/Apple game than an Amiga adventure so it doesn't get much attention in our circles. So I thought I'd fix that... here's a scene for scene (ish) comparison of everyone's least favourite Disney cartoon and the game they didn't know existed (or did, but still don't care).

I personally don't think it's the total write-off some would have you believe. I like that it's dark and brooding and deviates from the usual schmaltzy Disney fare. Some of the supporting cast are entertaining, it's just a shame about the bland lead.

When I was younger I just never realized that his game was even tied to the movie, I only knew the Dutch name

Sierra/Disney could have worked harder on the PR train then. Oops.

I'd imagine it's quite a confusing game for anyone who hasn't seen the movie because it follows it so closely and doesn't explain everything assuming people know the source material.

I was curious so looked it up: 'Taran en de toverketel'. I was hoping for something totally off-the-wall and unrelated to the original English. Movie title translations are often funny like that. Oh well.

Something else occurred to me when I was watching the Horned King's toady sidekick right-hand goblin creature...

Indeed, the Dutch title translates to "Taran and the Magic Couldron". A more colorful children-proof title for this slightly grim movie.

I didn't like the game very much to be honest, if it is the one I'm remembering. I remember a whole lot of "We did not expect you to do that" boxes. God I can play a lot of games again, my memory is getting hazy.

And the sequel is "Taran and the Magic Shouldron"?

The French title is "Taram et le chaudron magique" which is "Taran and the Magic Cauldron".
The end of the name was probably changed from "an" to "am" because "an" at the end of a word is usually pronounced the same as in "grant" (and not as in "can").
