Just found this on social media which explains the 'news':
"FYI they're buying up what they sold back in 2013, regaining their assets."
So... you buy back what you sold 10 years ago and make a big fuss about it. Seems legit.

After three decades that will be true for most companies, even if they didn't crash and reboot somewhere along the line. Blizzard today is also not the Blizzard that made Warcraft 2 and Diablo. Raven Software today is not the Raven Software that made Black Crypt. Etc. etc.

Next you'll tell me that Activision isn't the rebell company that escaped Time Warner to create a better environment for game developers anymore.

Atari Games innovated a lot in the beginning, basically an explosion of great games in less than a decade. The titles mentioned don't ring a bell. Atari 8-bit was also innovative, but the big titles were made by Activision - I hear. It was before my time, and I haven't played them. But I haven't played other big titles either, and they at least have the name to make a sequel get attention (for the 40+ crowd). E.g. Metroid, Sonic, Wonderboy, etc.

Acquisitions rarely solve problems, but if they make new good games, everybody wins and nothing else matters.

Releasing sequels is sometimes an admission of lack of new ideas - or at least the confidence to try them. There are exceptions, and if you succeed it's evident that you get a bunch of loyal people who are all about the um heritage, and volunteer to make Wikis, fan fiction, cosplays, events, etc.

People were happy with good sequels in the Amiga era. Monkey Island 2, Lemmings 2, SWOS, Pinball Fantasies, Speedball 2, Eye of the Beholder 2 etc all sold pretty well, Nintendo did sequels of almost all their top NES games for the SNES, Sonic 2sday was a big hype, and the annual EA Sports updates started in that era too. Indeed, plenty of hit sequels in the 8-bit and even VCS eras (Super Breakout, Ms Pacman, Stargate).
