Which Workbench for an ECS machine?

Hi all,

Following a house move and trip overseas I'll be upgrading my CDTV with a TF536 and updated ROMs courtesy of the wonderful DjCook on Amibay. I already have a maxed out Amiga 4000/060 for 3.2.2. I don't want/need another 3.2.2 box.

Apparently I need to upgrade the KS Roms, but the question is to what? Is there a performance impact between WB 2.1 and 3.1? Are there many ECS compatible CD32 titles expecting WB3?

As I've only got ECS and 1Mb of Chip (with some taken for the CD-Rom) I'm not running fancy graphics modes.I'll mostly be doing what I've done in 1.3 (coding, playing mods, going through CDTV titles, trying things and writing about them for WhatIFF, etc). The extras will be using my Vidi Amiga 12 with an analogue camera and drawing with an UltraPad A4 tablet.

Any thoughts on whether I should go 2.1 or 3.1, and why?

As a musician, I noticed that quite a bit of the music software I found on Exotica required 3.1.
Other than that, the biggest difference I find is that you’ll need to copy narrator device from a 2.04 disk to get day to work under 3.1, and also, 3.1 can allow you to have a background image, which I find important, and if it’s just a 4 colour image it won’t take up much chip - there’s also a Picasso native driver to take even less chip.

That's a good point. I also suspect that with the modified CDTV expansion ROMs a lot of Amiga CD titles that worked on CD32 but perhaps didn't need AGA may work. My main concerns with 3.1 are around chip RAM usage but there are probably more things to move stuff into fast RAM on 3.1 than there would be necessarily for 2.x. What was the software you found interesting/useful that required 3.1?
