Looking for a sidescrolling shooter

Long ago I played a futuristic sidescrolling shooter. The most unique thing about this was that as you moved up and down, you would flicker between the regular playing area, and a completely empty void. Thus, if you kept still in the void, you could pass through obstacles in the normal area. I don't really know if this was a normal feature of the game, of if it was due to a bad copy.

Let's see, what else can I remember... At least in the beginning of the game you would fly in a cave. There weren't many enemies, but there was a catch: you had to completely destroy the waves that came at you to proceed, otherwise the area would loop over. After a while you would fight a big dragon-like enemy made of fire. And I think that's about as far as I ever got in the game.

It would help if you can think about which year you played this.

1993, maybe. That probably doesn't help narrow it down much.

Disposable Hero is a horizontal shootem'up from 1993, it started in a cave IIRC, but there were tons of enemy waves.

also you could take a look to DNA Warrior, which is an old game from 1989 also with a cave as first stage.
