Mortal Kombat AGA - Did This Bugger Exist?
Hello
I have the original Mortal Kombat at home (the 3 disk version that works on OCS/ECS/AGA machines). But am curious as to whether an AGA version exists? I have heard rumours, it would make sense to me. Best Regards, |

Well, AFAIK the AGA version was just in peoples minds
If you had more then 1MB (2MB+) on ANY amy, you got yourself some extra effects, like: smoke, (more) speech, (almost?) no downlading, etc. I remember only that, while i've seen it on my friends A500 with 0,5MB Chip + 0,5 MB "Fast", my A600 with 1MB Chip then later with 1MB Fast added, my friends A1200 2MB Chip, and finally on my A1200 with 2MB Chip + 4MB Fast. No 256 colors, no 8 channel sound/music, no Shang Tsung's morph-in-every-character... |

Anyway, no, it never existed, and I doubt it has ever been planned. Acclaim surely aimed only at the biggest A50 userbase, to reduce risks, and never had any thoughts about convrting it to AGA. You still cant have most of the funcitons of the Megadrive version in a 2MB machine. Commodore should have kept the cartridge software slot of the Lorraine man. Stupid they were! |

Instantaneously accessible game data thanks to cartridge technology?
Imagine swapping disks in the middle of the game, to make shang=tsung morph into someone else. And other things like that. I answered the question in the very same message you quoted, mate! |

Some are two , some are three. Don't know if there is anything different in either version. |

Ah thats cool, but sometimes there are "professionaly-made" pirate copies, I swear. People have put pirate copies into damaged disks, and sold them as new.

There is a proof of concept of an AGA version of Mortal Kombat that runs pretty well on this site :
http://obligement.free.fr/articles/a...kombat_aga.php First level with parallaxes and even the animated monks. And the end of the article, the coder wrote "All this to say that we still have a lot of CPU time available to manage a second player and interactions between players." I'll try to translate the french text and put the code sources in the zone later (or find a working link to dowload it). Maybe it will give ideas to someone competent in assembler to enhance this or to FINISH it (fatality expected ) Last edited by sokolovic; 07 February 2024 at 14:35. |

Oh, and the "Shang Tsung's morph-in-every-character" would not be possible without hard-disk installation. Even with enough chip mem, imagine the game having to bulk-load all other characters from floppy disk into ram first before the fight starts... Would not have happened even with a "true" AGA version. IMO, they did it exactly right with AGA support in MK2: they added back all the missing sfx, animations, effects etc. instead of going with more colors first. Both may not have been possible. You realize, you are answering almost 20 years old post?
That was almost "back in the day" , where people didn't know hardware well. --------------- Oh.. and Mortal Kombat... btw. I am perfectly happy what Richard Costello achieved with both ports, especialy the second one. Simply amazing work. I fail to see how it can be done better, and still run on OCS 1MB |

Mortal Kombat AGA don't exists and fact is the original version comes in 2 disks
the 3 disk versions are the cracked ones and are unplaylable by floppy due slow diskload and diskchange btw, Mortal Kombat 1 in the Amiga is enough good and perhaps better than some console ports as the SNES or Megadrive |

We need a nice Arcade port of MK and MK2 for the Amiga AGA! Anyone?
