I think I read somewhere in the forum about the problems you described but I`m not sure if a solution was provided. At least the WHD version on my A1200 040 works.

Also, am I right in thinking that neither Amiga version is actually completable due to bugs?

I've completed the AGA version twice.

Not sure if it helps, but it might: I have installed it on my A500 (spec details in my signature) and it runs fine, with music.
What a great game! Quite slow indeed though. |

Is it just me, or is the A500 version slower than the A1200 version even on heavily accelerated systems?

i don't know if UFO for A500 support hardware acceleration, so maybe the general speed is always the same, or little faster.

I remember playing UFO on my A500, later in the game it became unplayable as computer enemy actions decision making was taking minutes to complete. Civilization suffered from similar effect

It's slow but bearable. The A500 and A1200 versions are totally different pieces of software seemingly made by completely different teams. The A500 version isn't worth playing as it runs so poorly and looks atrocious, although perversely it does at least have in-game music unlike the A1200 version. The A1200 version is a valiant attempt that suffers from missing the day/night cycle and lighting from the PC original. The CD32 version is a worse version of the A1200 port, but does have the PC intro, I believe someone made a "complete" version with this bolted onto the A1200 floppy version. That said it's really not worth playing UFO on the Amiga, OpenXcom makes the game so much better. |
