Ok, back from encountering the seller, i have Garrison I-II compilation with me.

Now it's time to dump the disks

Scenario disks are the same as IPF #610 and #800, first disk the same on both.

It can be seen that the duplication machine used was not the same because the length of the cells is different, but after the decoding data are bit-identical.

The format is different Ross. I tried to install my disks with CFOU's installers, and it doesn't work straight from track 0.

I have only checked from cylinder 2 onwards, where the scenario game data is, it is probably just to update the slave for track 0.
But there is nothing significant on cylinders 0 and 1, apart from the high-score save and the protection, which in any case is the same in both distributions.

I have understood why the conversion was not working in HFE v3. the protection is an empty track with a sort a dent/tooth toward the end of the track. It's a sort of "copylock" but more complicated, possibly with a weakbit aspect (the track is checked 3 times).

As you can guess for the crack I simply skipped the check on the protection track
There are no game checksums on the control code, which once decrypted is completely skipable (although there is a slight attempt at obfuscation..).

I did wonder if Disk 1 of both releases were the same, I have originals of Garrison I & II (as well as the tampered US release) and Garrison II just shows the same loading screen as Garrison I!

I believe Disk 1 serves the same purpose in each and every release aka "boot disk", while the loading screen remains peculiar to each scenario disk. Disk 1 might be slightly different (in structure) among the different releases, but it can be used to load both scenarii disks in the same way (either cracked or original).

If your original of Garrison II doesn't show its own loading screen (the four characters fully equipped standing up against a brown stone wall), then maybe it has been tampered with too!

To clarify.
All 'boot' disks are identical and contain a small intro/loader and the encrypted main(s*) program (so the crack must be there!).
Scenario disks contain only data, (saved) high-score and 'physical' protection.
In original version the latter are NDOS.
So scenario disks cannot be swapped between the original and the cracked version.

(*) two different versions, 512KB and 1MB version

I can create a CT RAW of my Garrison I Disk 2 dump and use an ADF of Garrison II Disk 1 to load it, but can't do that the other way around as the CT RAW of Garrison II Disk 2 just fails the protection check but WHDLoad install it just fine! I also created a Garrison 2 CT RAW of Disk 2 by using the protection track of Garrison I but that also failed to load so I guess Garrison II has a slightly different protection track and has issues as a CT RAW or my protection track is bad or it dumped incorrectly?

Both my Disk 1's are index aligned in HxC and appear unmodified, Garrison I shows all highscores as 10000 so that appears unmodified, WHDLoad of my Garrison II also shows 10000 and additionally ABC DEF GHI JKL MNO for positions 1 to 5, whether that's hard coded into WHDLoad I don't know but if not that also appears unmodified!


*UPDATE* It's not the protection track that's bad on my Garrison II Disk 2 it seems tracks 2 & 3 are at fault (1.0 / 1.1)!! If I take streams created from the official IPF using HxC and create a new CT RAW using those 2 tracks then the game loads and shows the same highscores as my WHDLoad install, unless track 1.0 is used to store highscores?

If either track 1.0 or track 1.1 from my original is used to create a CT RAW then the game won't load!

I've also sent my dumps to Denis for checking!!

Ok, i did the check :

Garrison : Disk 1 is fine, Disk 2 tracks 00.1 to 02.1 need to be cleaned and redumped.

Garrison II : Disk 1 is fine, Disk 2 track 01.1 (protection track) is seen as modified.

Both game are in storage, mentioned in the reply to your email, so won't be easy trying to find them!

At least the highscores are not modified
