Ogg downloads at exotica (for modland, high voltage sid collection and asma )

There have been major changes to the various exotica music collection interfaces. The biggest feature addition is that for most of the tunes you can now Ogg Vorbis encoded audio recordings directly from the search interface. These are created on the fly in real-time, and as such are provided for convenience rather than accuracy, however you may well be surprised at how good they sound. To access the Ogg downloads browse or search for a tune, and a button will be displayed above the results that allows you to show the Ogg download links.

Read more about the new Ogg download feature.

You will hate this question:
Why OGG and not MP3?
If I am anal about quality and true rendition, I get the original modules.
But if I don't care, I rather have something most every device can play nowadays, which is not ogg.

Cos it is free and MP3 is not.

My phone plays them and my portable music player, XBOX, and my Wii.

Smaller files/less bandwidth and still good listenable quality. patent free. Note that the recordings are also cached, so a smaller size makes a different and they are streamed from my home adsl 2+ connection (2.5mbit upstream). We use ogg around exotica for most stuff, so why change it. Also most devices I have play ogg fine. I can't think of one that doesn't.

about quality btw, most tunes sound great though this. the xm quality minus encoding loss will be the same as using xmplay on windows for example.

Fair enough, but I haven't seen me paying for making MP3s, ever, and I don't pirate an MP3 encoding option, so what's the deal with that, because I missed it...

also, with more widespread use of ogg, hardware/software developers will give it more support. So I support it and I hope the already good support only improves. You can even play ogg files on an 060 Amiga.

For the time being iTunes works fine with me. And I haven't paid for it.

It's been around for a damn while, one would think it should be pretty widespread already but it isn't.

The portable devices i own such as mobile etc do support ogg, and most pc media players do etc

I think alex is referring to you have paid money as the hardware companies you bought the hardware/software off, have had to pay a licence fee.

As I said, I didn't pay for iTunes, and I doubt the clone PC I run it in has paid tfor me to use MP3

Apple paid it for you when they made/distributed iTunes.

Something I doubt BuZz is prepared to do.

I have had positive responses to the choice of ogg also. What are you unable to play it on anyway ? I think even my old unused "mp3 player" does ogg. Even i pods can be made to play ogg (with a new firmware ;-) ). Anyway, I doubt I will offer mp3. Time to move on imho.

Hey, as I said, I *asked* a question, in no way it was a negative response or asking you to change a thing!
Just interested in the choice. OGG is a format I never embraced because it always seemed like one of those that need a bit of a work out to get running, maybe just because of a licensing reason which I truely never gave two shits about.
An alternative player (or firmware, which in the case of the iPod, if you mean rockbox, it eats up battery like a hungry Godzilla. I used to have it on my old iPod Mini) is something some people you deal with in your normal life are "unable" to score, too.

Just don't mind this old dog, great work as usual BuZz

Sorry if I misunderstood. So you don't want mp3 downloads then? because I might be persuaded

Yeh rockbox. Didn't know it had battery issues. Interesting project though. I borrowed some code from them some years ago (took a couple of tremor optimisations for my 060 vorbis player if i recall)

Nice to see these modules make it to lossless, they are from mods aren't they (on the fly). And not from mp3 or other lossy source ?

Mmm not to clued up on ogg audio format, is it lossless or lossy. Looked at wiki just now, doesn't make it very clear at a quick glance.

With flac type pages it will start Flac Lossless codec (or similar), any way lossless maybe to big for you right now. We don't mind because we can easily convert to flac loassless anytime from source. Well that is winuae source, and only good if it is good, still need to check out the recent asio

ogg is lossy like mp3. it does a lot better at lower bitrates though. for perfect recordings you are better off downloading and encoding to flac perhaps. flac can be 1400kbit, so I don't quite have the bandwidth ;-)

In time when we all have plenty of bandwidth there won't be a problem.

I applaud you trying to do better than mp3, more so if people can play them on their phones and players.

(Flac bitrate would be same as the wave file, lossless wav=flac=wav)
