Question Green blinking Power Light A1200 with A500 Type 2 PSU

Hi

I recently purchased an A500 PSU (lightweight, type 2 4.5A) to use with my A1200 with ACA 1233/40 accelerator board, as I heard the standard A1200 PSU can struggle with anything other than a stock machine.

It worked well for a few hours then the A1200 shut down, showing a constantly blinking green power light. If I switch the PSU off and on again I get the blinking light and no boot up.

The A1200 still works perfectly with my standard A1200 PSU.

I'm assuming the A500 PSU is faulty but I wouldn't know how to check it, although I do have a multimeter.

Any ideas on what is happening here?

Thanks

Scroll down about halfway down and you'll find the pinout of the PSU and what voltages should be where: http://www.ianstedman.co.uk/Amiga/am..._supplies.html

Other useful info there too. It's possible though that you'll still see the correct voltages, and it's only when you add a load (the Amiga) to the PSU, it will fail.

You're better off using a converted ATX PSU, A500 PSU are getting pretty old now! If you want to keep it looking genuine you can retro fit the ATX PSU innards inside the A500 PSU chassis

If I opt for an ATX PSU, what wattage should I be looking at for an expanded 1200? Also, do I have to find a model with a certain Amperage rating for +5V +12V adn -12V?

Thanks

You could look into a Pico PSU or similar, its more suited to the lower power requirements - some guys build the PSU right into the Amiga and just feed 12v dc into it, not sure what they do about the lack of -12v though?

I have just seen that Amigakit sell a 300W modded ATX for £29. However, I'd like to save the original. Is it possible to get them repaired/serviced? What usually fails? I have tested the voltages (PSU not loaded) and they are all over the place. +12v=17V, -12V=-15V, +5V=1V. These all fluctuate a lot but
it's obvious it ain't working properly!

It's the light one (type 2, 4.5A). Thanks for the offer Roy. I take it you know your way around these things then?!
