Hello from Czechia

Hi all,
(disclaimer: English is not my native lang)
... after a looong break from anything Amiga-related (I had an A500 in my childhood) I slowly began to acquire some A500 boards on eBay and elsewhere 5 years ago. Due to recent moving I was unable to get a single A500 fully working with nice video output, so this year will (hopefully) be my comeback to the Amiga world.

Why not AGA? Well, I don't think my limited time would allow me to concentrate on more than my beloved A500 machine, and I also like the limitations of OCS/ECS. I think that's what makes it somehow special

I hope to find answers here to my new A500 problems like a parts list, because I will have to re-cap some boards and I also found a damaged resistor on one of my rev6a.

BTW I was shocked how expensive the A500 boards are on eBay nowadays! From 50 EUR (5 years ago) to at least 150 EUR today... That's just sick, don't you think?

Hi Amarok, welcome to EAB. Yes, Amiga prices are crazy at the moment.

Many of us moved to different emulation - form RPi to MiSTer FPGA due to prices getting higher and old machines slowly dying off...

BTW, welcome to EAB.

Is Czechia Czech Republic??

Hi and thanks.
Yes, Czechia short for Czech Republic. The land of beer :-D

I don't like emulation much, but at FPGA seems to be a good alternative. Better HW simulation than SW emulation...

And no, emulation is not bad (as long as it emulates an Amiga, of course )
But I'm just not a big fan of it, I prefer physical HW (and I'm fond of m68k, have a couple of them in my collection).

Welcome, I love both forms really. Emulation is super flexible, but I do enjoy the touch of real hardware. My kids also love putting the disks into the drives. I think they miss something they never had. He He

Indeed, I remember the cassette tape drive of C64, there was just something magic about it, rewinding the tape to beginning of track and watching (and hearing!) how the game was loading...
It's quite funny that people today use sound emulation in their GoTek drives, to hear the sound of a floppy drive

Not according to my google. Somehow google disagree...

BTW, mid 1995 I visited couple of small towns around Prague. How bad my memory is, I don't remember their names, I know they sounded Slavic. After unsuccessfully asking for directions in German, I figured out that use of Slavic language get's you where you want to go. Just add ch to my original language - and almost there.

Sure, but both have their positives and negatives.

Dunno, I don't use Google But Czechia is the official name short name for Czech Rebublic since maybe 5 years or so. Most people here don't like that shorter form but I do, "Republic" always reminds me of StarWars and is just too long

Yes, town names here sound pretty Slavic Today you would be fine with English, like anywhere else in Europe. There's been a trend learning German and French after 1989 but somehow it changed, most people prefer English at school.

So true, Czechia sounds like Chechnya. F*cking hate it. But apparently we have to have a shortened version of the Czech Republic...

Germans say "Tschechien" very often, I don't often hear "Tschechische Republik", so the new short name "Czechia" comes very close to it.

TL;DR
Chechnya vs. Czechia -> yes, sound similar, but that could also be said with:
Slovenia vs. Slovakia.
Interestingly I've never heard someone say he lives in the "Slovak Republic" (which is the official name), everyone uses the short form Slovakia. Maybe that's also the reason for the short name Czechia (because we used to be Czechoslovakia)? Probably.

Indeed. And I miss [FLOPPYDISK] as an icon for "save" in today's programs (which are now called applications), now we have to click on weirds boxes with some arrow

Last edited by Amarok; 17 June 2021 at 09:30. Reason: UTF8 missing floppy icon

It is interesting with country names... in southern Slavic countries - Slavic is called 'Slaveni' and people from Slovenia are called 'Sloveni'. Quite confusing.

Last night while setting something up on MiSTer FPGA, I loaded A500 1.3 configuration, and just bit later I loaded Turrican 2 just to listen intro music... Nostalgia...
