Floppy disk Super C (Konami) - original ADF + raw dump

G'day EAB peeps!

Tonight I bring you Super C by Konami, which was requested by another EAB member (GeorgeSN) earlier in the year.

Despite the title, the Amiga conversion by Konami was based mostly on the original Super Contra coin-op (Konami) rather than the Super C coin-op (Konami Classic). More bizarre, though, is that Konami referred to the 'C' in Super C as Commando and NOT Contra on the game packaging of the Amiga & other home conversions (see HERE)

Unfortunately, for us, the Amiga conversion was a piss-poor port done by the North American PC dev team that Konami contracted. I'm sure if Konami in Japan had overseen the conversion, then we would've got something a bit classier like the MSX & console conversions of Contra/Gryzor and other Konami coin-op classics. Ahhh well......

Anyway, I've made an ADF and raw dump of my original copy. In the Zone. Enjoy (if you can)!!

Yeh, it was late last night and it only occurred to me today that I forgot to mention the manual protection Given how big a release Super C would've been back in the day on the Ami, I was surprised that the disk didn't have some hard core copy protection.....but then I remembered that in the U.S. they weren't very fond of oppressive anti-piracy measures.

If you look at the protection code sheet in the Super C manual, then you quickly realise that Konami didn't need to use any disk protection as the code sheet is dark maroon with dull black print. Unless you shine it in the light at the right angle, you can't even bloody read the thing! I'm sure this was to make photocopying useless back in the day. It remains to be seen if scanning will work any better. I will probably have to play around with the scan in a graphics package, make some chicken sacrifices and cross my fingers & toes!

Anyway, in the meantime you can remove the manual protection using Maverick, Lockpick or RawCopy. They all have a dedicated parameter to remove the manual protection for Super C.

There is a way for this protection code sheet, make a 300 dpi scan of the codes, and i'll do my sorcery

PS : i tried on Castlevania codes, as it uses the same sheet, and it works nicely hehehe

Modern scanners are quite amazing! I only needed to spend a few minutes on image processing to make the code sheet nice and legible whilst still retaining the original colours. Upped to HOL! Feel free to improve upon it.....

Nice work, they're more legible and definitely much better for printing purposes......but scanning the code sheet in greyscale last night gained similar results. What I was wondering is whether any "sorcery" can achieve something similar in terms of legibility whilst retaining the original colours and minimising fading/washout? Just asking as it's always nice if we can remain as authentic as possible to the original when upping scanned stuff to HOL.

About the bold part, I always found that amusing. The abbreviation was a considerably discussed topic on various forums throughout the years in the past. I think they decided to dub it Commando as part of the same reason they abbreviated it, which was to avoid certain political references. It was kind of funny that people wondered what the C stood for, even though they owned the box/manual to the NES game and it more or less had the answer on there. It's also on the DOS version, of course, but that's really just because the box (and manual) for that and this Amiga version is the exact same.

I have documented the Super C Amiga game the most that I could, but I do wonder if it has any cheat codes that are simply not known yet; the DOS version has one through a simple key combination during gameplay.

For anyone interested, I've upped a deprotected ADF of my Super C original to the Zone. Just wanted to see how good a job the Lockpick parameter would do in removing the manual protection. Turns out that it just does the minimum and still requires players to enter a 4 digit code (anything will do!), as opposed to getting rid of the manual prompt altogether.

Yep, nice work once again! I had a quick play around too using GIMP and managed to almost eliminate fading/washout altogether and was able to isolate the text to blacken it further. Most of the text shows up nicely, but there are a few areas where there is a bit of washout that needs to be manually touched up. If it requires too much work touching up, then I'll simply up what you produced to the HOL entry!

You're very welcome! I kinda wondered if the Iran-Contra affair might've had something to do with the fun & games that Konami were perpetrating on the naming of the game in North America. Perhaps it would've been understandable when the Super Contra coin-op was released in 1988 (but for whatever reason they resisted the temptation at that point to shorten it to Super C), but it just doesn't make sense for them to have done it a couple of years later in 1990 for the Amiga/PC/NES home conversions.....especially as they ham it up and refer to the "Super Commando Hall of Fame" on the Ami/PC game box (something that wasn't on the NES box!).

As for cheat codes, I've never seen any published anywhere for the Ami version of Super C. Someone with cracking/coding skills could probably give you a definitive answer if they took the time to take a closer look through the code. A quick go with Action Replay, though, might give clues as to whether there are any built-in cheats.

BTW you mention "documenting" the Ami conversion of Super C. Do you run a Contra webshrine, by any chance?

Cheat Mode
Load Super C and watch the FMV sequence until the two main characters start shooting. While they are shooting, perform a soft reset of the Amiga system. At the command line, type in "5|_|P3R C" (It is actually a stylized way of writing Super C.) After entering this command, run the game. Before the game actually begins, a message will prompt you to press t anytime to open up the cheat menu you enabled. You can activate more than one cheat.

Code: Result: 
Former One-Man Army. Infinite Lives. 
Can't Touch This. Invincibility (you can either choose this or infinite lives, not both). 
Quick Game XX Level Select, where XX represents what level you type from 02-08. 
Lucky Start. On the top-view levels, you have unlimited shell bombs. 
Naturally Explosive. Start each new life with the grenade gun. 
Naturally Beamed. Start each new life with the laser gun. 
Naturally Fast. Start each new life with the machine gun. 
Naturally Spread. Start each new life with the spread gun. 
Good Shots You Gain points faster.
