Use of the catweasel on winuae recreate the "clicks" very well. I drop a few tears when i first heard it with my standard pc drive

Necro-posting!

What was said thus far:
  • Floppy reading sound should be based on 84+ different samples, rather than just one, as acustics change when the head moves across the disk.
  • A mono sample recording was made, and shared, all download links are now dead
  • The WinUAE code was made to support the 84 different samples (I think?), but only one is shipped by defaul, lest the EXE file will be to big.

My questions

Question 1: now, 10 years later, what's the status? Have someone managed to get the different samples in? Or is something similar emulated in software? Looking at /use/share/fs-uae/floppy_sounds/ folder on GNU/Linux, it looks (sounds?) like it's only a few subsets?

Question 2: does anyone have the 84 samples that were made, and posted in this thread 11 years ago?

Question 3: where can I find the source code that makes use of the floppy wav-sounds? I'd like to understand how I'd combine them together.

hi there.

it's been 11 years and god kmows how many hard drives but i'll see if i have the original samples somewhere.
they may be lost on my end though.
I never conciously archived them :/

as for recapturing the sound...
I always meant to but ended up not doing it since people were mostly fine with the first recording.

edit:
found the old sound package.
http://download.abime.net/zone/drive_sounds.zip

the "loud" files correspond to the 84 track set.
the "st" will be the original sound consisting of the same click over and over.
the clicks were all kept in a single sound file.

if you want I can dig up the old recording equipment and get you a sample of another drive.
I had given the amigas that I used to do this to a computer collector. but I still have my A2000
I just need some free time to dig it up, get it running, get a copy of d-copy (or similar) and get the recording stuff running. I don't have time for this weekend but I might be able to the next one.
what I had back then is long gone. i'm going to have to improvise with what I have now.

Heya john4p,

You can find the file on the EAB File Server under the directory "/TheZone/files".

The file is named "drive_sounds [the floppy emulation sounds from 2004].zip" (as when it transferred over to the server the comments get put into square brackets)

looks like the sounds were over there the entire time.

http://www.winuae.net/download/

there the sound archive is, with three sound versions:
files named real or a500: a sound library made in 2007
files marked LOUD: the recording I made in 2004
files marked ST: the original monotonic files
