Tablet support on Amiga question.

Recently tried an old Wacom Graphire usb tablet connected to my Amiga via a TOM adapter.

It basically works like a mouse so straight away its better for drawing. I want to find out if the Amiga and software for it support:

Pressure sensitivity
Acceleration
other functions and configurations that you would find in Wacom preferences.

Ive heard that some wacom drivers are over at Aminet. will they support this going through usb to a joystick port?

The Amiga im testing this on is a:

A600 Vampire 2 with Personal Paint installed. OS3.9 RTG

Thanks

you have to test it on your own. I cannot remember anyone did that before,
or reported anything related.

over at amiga.org, it was said, FormAldiHyd supports pressure tablets.

some tablet software is already on the ftp, you may try too, AccuPoint software and those tablet_collection.

As far as I know, there's no support for connecting in that way. The support from older packages is via serial connection, not USB, so you might need to go older again with your tablets.

lets assume we could find those sets with the correct connectors:
there are some cheap usb to serial 25 pin (ebay) sets, may those work somehow?

Hmmm, those adaptors are for connecting an old device (like an old tablet) to a computer with USB ports. It wouldn't work for connecting a USB tablet to the Amiga's serial port if that's what you mean. You need a native RS232 tablet that's supported by one of the Amiga drivers ([url=http://aminet.net/package/driver/input/Wacom_150]this one for example[/url). I'm not sure if you could use a USB tablet under 3.x if your Amiga was fitted with USB ports - perhaps, if they support the same protocols. You can on OS4 machines, so maybe the OS4 drivers are based on older 68k ones.

That works the other way around.

hmm, too bad.

@Daedalus: missed you answer, but basicaly a no, as said by Akira

there is a tiny adapter for the par port, connecting an usb stick,
so it does work as a hdd.
isnt it somehow possible to create something like that for the serial port?

#1) USB drives on Amiga.
but at the end it would be some sort of driver issue.

Just get a really old serial/PS/2 Wacom tablet. They work as intended.

ok. ive installed FormAldiHyd and wacom 150 drivers from aminet and i have arteffect4 installed. no pressure coming from the wacom usb tablet? im not sure if its been set up properly or the pressure doesn't work via usb?

i would get a serial tablet but they're impossible to find.

one more thing. Is there a keyboard shortcut that corresponds with the two mouse buttons? I only ask as my graphic pen is broken and has no buttons; it can only be used to move the pointer. I have to keep plugging in my mouse to open menus etc.

~cheers

The Tom adaptor isn't intended for that sort of USB use and will only emulate a standard mouse, which is why you don't get a pressure reading - any programs will simply see it as a mouse. I'm not sure if drivers exist for tablets for proper USB interfaces under OS 3, but that's a very expensive route to go down anyway.

Keyboard shortcuts for the mouse all involve holding down the left Amiga key. Left Amiga key + arrows moves the mouse, left Amiga key + left Alt is left click, left Amiga key + right Alt is right click.

Can't be bothered to check if this works as intended on the Amiga, but at least it has a serial port: http://www.ebay.de/itm/NEU-Wacom-Gra...AAAOSwvzRXzG4x

Did this ever materialised, i.e. does the Poseidon stack nowadays support tablets? http://www.amiga-news.de/en/news/AN-...-00091-EN.html

I don't have one to test with, but according to the docs any HID compliant Tablet should work, and there is specific support for Wacom too.

Tried and yes it does!!! However, the tablet keeps disconnecting and reconnecting in Poseidon Even when connected to a powered USB hub.

Reviving this thread. Anyone had better luck with this in the mean time, i.e. using a USB graphics tablet via Poseidon (and maybe additional tablet software) and keeping it connected? Was reminded about this by this cool movie. [ Show youtube player ]

Send a message via ICQ to Predseda
But those are serials, connected to Amiga serial port, not USB. Okay, I suppose USB is a kind of serial, too.

Yes I know, the video just reminded me of trying my USB tablet without total success.

Nobody has some hints how to resolve the USB Wacom tablet from "dropping dead" in Poseidon.

I now also have the serial version of the same tablet ET-0405-R, but either that is dead, or requires some additional power source via the PS/2 connector(s) that are connected to the serial connector to the tablet.

---

Update: Tried Freeway Pro USB instead of Highway and USB Wacom ET-0405-U now works (no more "dead dropping"). The question now is, how to feed the pressure data into the applications? Is there a way to configure AccuPoint with Poseidon? Haven't tried FormAldiHyd yet.

Alternatively, if someone can explain to me whether and how to use the PS2 connector(s) additionally to the serial connector the ET-0405-R, that would be very much appreciated.

---

OK, serial tablet is powered now. But I still don't get it to work.

Either I'm not configuring it properly in AccuPoint, or my serial port is bust. If I do a sersnoop (Aminet) and use the tablet (without AccuPoint running), nothing is shown...

So, what an adventure this was/is...

First of all, many thanks to @Mixel for his awesome video on Youtube [ Show youtube player ]!

So, I have 2 tablets, basically they're the same except one is USB, the other is serial.

Wacom Graphire USB - ET-0405-U
Wacom Graphire Serial - ET-0405-R

Software tried:
  • AccuPoint Wacom
  • Tableau Pro, What I would love to have is Haage & Partner Graphire Driver (https://www.haage-partner.de/amiga/p.../tableau-e.htm), since Tableau Pro apparently does not support my tablet. Anyone has this?
  • Wacom 150
  • PenPartner
  • Formaldihyd
  • Poseidon (USB tablet) + its input.device (with LoadModule)

Debugging with Wacom 150 tool (develop/AmigaOSTabletAPI) is very nice, this at least makes you not blind to was actually there in terms of coordinates & pressure.

Wacom Graphire Serial - ET-0405-R with db9 to db25 adapter

Not working:
  • Accupoint + tablet.library (Neither of the 3 tablet types I can select work)
  • PenPartner
  • Wacom 150
  • Tableau Pro

Working, but only as mouse, AmigaOSTabletAPI does not report pressure:
  • Formaldihyd

So basically no software to work with.
Then I remember Mixel telling something about wrong adapter.

My db9 to db25 is similarly wired as this picture (only db9 is male & db25 is female), which apparently is the proper way to interconnect db9 & db25 rs232.

However the Wacom 150 documentation shows this as the wiring that is needed. Mixel can you confirm how the adapter should be wired?

I am confused though if the adapter would be wrong, why formaldihyd still sort of works.

Wacom Graphire USB - ET-0405-U

I gave up on this in the past, since it didn't run stable on my Highway USB card. Every 1 a 2 seconds it disconnected and connected again (even with a powered hub). However, I recently got a FreewayPro and to my surprise the tablet ran stable...

AmigaOSTabletAPI shows all data needed, incl pressure.
ArtEffect didn't seem to work, just as mouse. Then, after so much time & effort, I noticed I needed to enable pressure for each individual tool from the toolbox window. Yeah, working tablet including pressure!! Tablet driver must be set to AccuPoint though to work.

Not sure if the LoadModule for Poseidon's input.device is really needed. I am so happy I got it working that I haven't tried yet without it.

However, the USB tablet doesn't work with DPaint
It also didn't work with the free PPaint 7.1. Or do I need a newer version for tablet support?
