WHDLoadMenu: is a frontend for WHDLoad. It displays a list of WHDLoadable applications in the given directory and allows them to be started by clicking on the name of the application using the mouse or by selecting the application name using the keyboard or a joystick.

WHDLoadMenu is intended to beconditionally started on system startup.

WHDLoadMenu requires WHDLoad (http://www.whdload.de/whdload/WHDLoad_usr.lha) to start the applications.

Please refer to the provided AmigaGuide documentation for installation
instructions.

1. Install using the provided Install script
2. Add Install:Path/StartWHDLoadMenu to the very beginning of Startup-Sequence
3. Hold down left mouse button and reboot

Version 0.11 changes:

- User defineable background color in WHDLoadMenuAnimated
- Improved ball animation in WHDLoadMenuAnimated
- Remove unnecessary name length limit in WHDLoadMenuAnimated

I'm glad to see this constantly being updated.

I'd like to see the ability to customize the installation after its been installed. eg. I don't like the windowed interface so I'd like to switch it to the animated screen, in black, etc. At the moment I'm having to use the installer everytime I want to make a change.

You don't have to reinstall it every time, you can use a text editor to change the scripts the installer makes for you.

Naturally this is not mouse driven, but we can see it as a gateway drug to learning how AmigaDOS operates. :-)

It has Mouse + keyboard + joystick navigation and type to search. Basically all you need. Starts practically immediately, no nonsense, no bullshit. :-D

As said by Jope, you don't need to reinstall, you can change colors or path from scripts, maybe the author in the future will create a Prefs GUI, hopefully

Yeah, I've seen you can edit the files manually but that shouldn't be necessary with programs like this

This looks similar to iGame but seems even more lightweight without the screenshot? Can this be run from shell as it would save a considerable amount of memory for those needing every byte!

I did not yet try this software, but I am sure, it can be run from shell, since it is meant wo be started from Startup-Sequence where it is of course started from shell

It is designed to be started at the very beginning of the startup-sequence by holding the left mouse button at startup to make sure as much as possible memory is available for the games.

It can be run from a shell, preferably using the provided runner script. When the user selects the applcation to be started from the menu, the menu generates a script which will run the selected application using WHDLoad. After this the menu itself exits and the runner script runs the generated script. This way the menu itself is not in memory at all when WHDLoad is started, leaving the maximum amount of contiguous memory available for WHDLoad.


It should be noted that by default the script is generated in the WHDLoadMenu installation directory. Executing scripts in AmigaOS also uses T: which also resides on the startup disk unless assigned to RAM:, for instance. Using the disk has the abovementioned advantage of leaving as much contiguous memory available as possible. However, it has the caveat that when using FFS disks the system should only be powered off while not running a game because otherwise the disk could be left in an invalidated state.

PFS3 will just forget the temp file in this case.

I recommend doing assign t: ram: though, if you are not absolutely starved for RAM.

Yes, it allows you to see the game list without going to the Workbench first. If you switch the computer on and keep the left mouse button pressed, instead of the Workbench the first thing you will see on the screen is [ Show youtube player ] or [ Show youtube player ] (depending on which UI you choose to use).
