Missing Gadtools library on 3.2 running on 3.1.4 Kickstarts
Hello,
I have an A4000 with a 060/zz9000 and a fresh install of 3.2 running. It is running on 3.1.4 Kickstarts. Everything has been working fine for a few weeks. But today after I had:
I suddenly could not open Screen modes any more, getting a message gadtools library 47+ is required. I can not format anything either, when I chose a partition and select format, nothing happens. Wonder what I did that messed things up, all was working fine yesterday. Anyone got a clue? Last edited by cv643d; 26 November 2023 at 15:34. |

I'd update gadtools.library, maybe Active Netconnect or VisualPrefs requires a certain version. Quite a few apps don't necessarily accept the latest.
HDToolbox requires enter pressed after each selection usually. IDK what the case is with 3.2. |

3.1.4 comes with gadtools v45, 3.2 with gadgtools v47. v54 is certainly nothing that is related to the classical systems.

since gadtools is part of the ROM you have certainly not lost it. And as Thomas says v54 is not on any classical system. It sounds like you have installed some 3rd party utility that for some reason asks for something it can never get. So I would look at what you have installed over the last few days and try and get rid of those things

Clarification, when I click on Screenmodes in prefs I get the following error and Screenmodes does not open up:
"Requires gadtools.library v47+". Ok, I will try to deinstall VisualPrefs and NetConnect and see what happens |

It looks like you do not have a physical ROM, thus gadtools v47 should then be loaded through LoadModule. Is this library in LIBS:?
Open a shell window and type the following: version LIBS:gadtools.library file full This should hopefully tell you v47. If not, you installed something on top of this. |

He said he's using Kickstart 3.1.4, which comes with v45 - the tool he tries to run need v47+. Seems to be a pretty normal thing to me. He needs to put a newer version into libs. Maybe he had before and some other tool installed an older one.

Yes that is correct, I have 3.1.4 Kickstarts installed.
I have a gadtools.library in libs: and the version of it is 47.16, just checked now. I have uncommented everything related to VisualPrefs and NetConnect from user-startup and startup-sequence. And still can not open Screenmodes, getting complaint of missing gadtools 47+ library. I did not mention, I had added a Re4091 to the system, but as that is hardware only I do not think thats what is causing problems. Can always reinstall, but would be nice to find the problem... |

Make sure that Startup-Sequence is unchanged with all the LoadModule stuff in the beginning. Otherwise gadtools.library from Libs is not used because it is also in ROM.

NetConnect is most likely responsible for this problem. Its installer probably overwrote various classes with older versions without asking. The problem isn’t actually with gadtools.library, but some other component.
Easiest thing to do is to reinstall 3.2. Alternatively, manually restore the contents of SYS:Classes and SYS:Libs from the 3.2 media. |

You are probably correct, will probably need to reinstall, tried to replace content of Libs and Classes with files from another installation but it fails to boot and gets stuck with an error message. Will take a backup of sys everytime I install software from now on

Believe it or not, reinstalled 3.2 today after work and got the same error on a clean installation, "missing gadtools library", thought I was going nuts for a second
Seemed like the problem was related to the 4091 card. Once removed there was no complaning about gadtools library and everything works as it should. I have no doubt the card is fully working, but have not set it up yet since I have no ZuluSCSI so perhaps I screwed something up when I built it or it clashes with the zz9000. Will investigate in the future. |

Interesting! Is it a vintage 4091 or one of the recent re-implementation builds? If the latter, you may want to report this to the developers. Also, what is your Buster revision?

It is a reimplementation - I am on buster 11.
Yes, had a discussion on Discord earlier today and was told that the 4091 rom opens upp and closes gadtools library, so I guess all will be fine when I get/burn 3.2 kickstarts |

That is indeed a sneaky one - hope the reimplementers state that it specifically requires a 3.2 kickstart in ROM (even though it sounds like a poor choice to me)

It does not matter whether a ROM (or BootROM) component opens or closes a gadtools.library. The replacements LoadModule makes are effective for boot ROM components, too. This is an installation error.

Well, yes and no.. On cold boot, the replacement isn't (yet) available, and if that causes the boot rom to fail, you're screwed.
