Getting a SBC to recognise a IDE HD
Hi
I cant get my SBC to recognise any IDE HD on bootup. I have tried many HD and IDE cables but null results. Any suggestions? Regards |

Are you sure it's an IDE connector?
Sure the hard drive works? Master/Slave jumper settings? How big is the hard drive / how old the SBC? (i.e. Do you need to set the max cylinder jumper to 1024?) |

When you say "on boot up", do you mean on power on? Does it recognise it if you soft reset - if so, could be a spin up problem?

2) check tried all combinations (i only have the hd plugged in tho, no cd rom or anything) 3) i tried 1 3gb HD and 1 4gb HD. The sbc is fairly recent as far as i can tell, made in 2000 i think. Ask Zetr0 he knows all about it. How would i set the max cylinder jumper to 1024 then? |

Onboard IDE enabled in BIOS?
Is it a 2.5" style connector or 3.5" (normal) connector? |

yeah as soon as i power on the whole machine. i think i treid a soft reset but that didnt help, but i will double check. i dont think there is any spin up problem at all with these hd but i will test them out on other machines.

The cable doesn't fit isn't actually the best answer but anyway...
Does the supposedly IDE connector has the cut that makes you connect the IDE cable one way only or you can put it reversed? Meaning... Have you tried (in case you can do it) to put the cable the other way around? Check if there is a pin1 indication where you should put the red stripe of the ribbon Secondly... The HD you put is deffinitelly an HD that works on other systems? If so... Since it's the only one that you connect... Is it set to Master (Only 1 Disk present) jumper? What does the BIOS says? |
