The History of UAE

I've always been a bit of an emulator nerd. In fact, I tried the (very first?) version of UAE on Unix back in the mid 90s when it was released.

Back then it could only boot a Kickstart ROM and do nothing else. Which I was still super impressed by at the time, as the average pundit thought emulating an Amiga was impossible.

Has anyone ever written up a history of the emulator? It strikes me that with the forks and WinUAE it's one of the oldest emulators available that's still in active development. It's even older than MAME!

It would be great to read or watch a timeline of developments as it's coming up to 30 years old!

I remember booting Z-Out on a black and white Sparc 3 sun station!

Yes, there were also a bunch of fake Amiga emulators circulating prior to that. One did nothing but whirr your disk drive and show a Kickstart image.

I believe it had the actual ROM embedded in the executable as a decoy if viewed in a Hex Editor.

Crazy that I'd run a random EXE like that from a BBS... but different times I guess. I didn't use my 386 for banking!

Original UAE came with changelog (NEWS file) which probably helps. My first patch appears to be in 0.8.11 (but I am quite sure I started working with UAE when it was v.0.8.6 or so. I think it was 1998 or 1999) and most AGA emulation updates in 0.8.x are mine

I think many don't realise just how many years you have worked on the emulator, 25+ I believe..

Just for fun, here's a Wiki about UAE..Remember, Wiki's can be prone to factual errors due to their openness.

The link won't paste in properly, just search on Google for UAE Emulator and it will be the 1st or 2nd entry...
