"Unable to open your tool"

Missus.

As I'd feared, WHDLoad proves to be another opportunity for frustration calamity. Trying to install several hard-drive games from BTTR (some WHDLoad versions, some not), I invariably get this error. If I try to install WHDLoad itself I get "Unable to open your tool Installer". With Pinball Fantasies it's "Unable to open your tool IconX" and so on. I have a big ol' hard drive with Workbench 3.1 installed on it, and those things (eg IconX) seem to work just dandy the rest of the time. What am I doing wrong NOW?

"But anyway I wrote it."

Dear Stuart Campbell,

First off I have to say I loved your work at AP!
You probably won't print this letter! But anyway I wrote it.
I have read most of your latest posts at the EAB, and it seems to me that it is time for you to peruse one of these:

Best regards,

Concerned

Any idea which of the 116 results for "installer" on Aminet is actually the one I'd want?

The directory name can help, it should be an util. Having said this, I now wonder if it was "install" rather than "installer"

You could try Installer43_3.lha in the util/misc directory. Admittedly it is the development pack, but Installer should be in there.

Oh, and if you want to install WHDLoad, just copy it and the other programs (like Patcher and DIC) to your C directory.

Hope this helps.

OK, I needed that bit of sarcasm. don't tell me you are NOT used to it. but you really DO need it!

If your program can't even find IconX there surely is a problem bigger than just needing a newer installer.

Because if the problem was this, you could load the Install script and it would give you an error.

"Unable to open your tool 'IconX" or whatever means that workbench couldn';t find the tool!

I hope that you are NOT booting from any sort of floppy again :P

I hate to be Johnny Stupid, The Boy Who Doesn't Know Anything At All, but what am I supposed to actually DO with all these things? Where are they supposed to go? In the WHDLoad folder? In the Amiga hard drive root directory? In my PC's root directory? Up a monkey's bum? I'd kinda hoped everyone had gathered by now that I don't know even the first thing about the Amiga's stupid operating system.

Man, I never thought I'd find myself using my Windows PC and thinking "Phew, at last a nice simple straightforward OS where you click on things and they JUST WORK".

Nope, from WB3.1 installed on the HD. IconX is clearly there, because it shows up with no problems with other programs. It's just the Pinball Fantasies installer that can't find it.

If you are that frustrated why don't you use AIAB or Bloodwych's workbench setups?

Or perhaps grab a pre-installed WHDLoad version of the game(s) you wish to play.

I've wiped the hard drive and started again with a whole new install of WB3.1, which has seemingly solved the tool-opening problem, only to replace it with an exciting new one - loads of the supposedly-ready HD games I downloaded from BTTR (eg Project X and Full Contact) now can't find something called "xpkmaster.library". (Aminet, of course, provides over 100 unhelpfully-labelled matches, none of which seem to work.) I'm not even going to start on the horrors experienced in trying to translate the various instructions for installing WHDLoad into comprehensible, useful English.

I really had forgotten how much I fucking hated Amigas.

I presume that you are joking?

Don't let frustration curb your enthusiasm.

If you f**king hate the Amiga so much then why bother trying...Duh!! He has no patience....Why should any of us bother...

Go look in the Zone for the file you require. Try and show some respect next time you post. We are all Amiga lovers here and if you post comments like the one before how can you expect to get any help..

- Hillsy.

PS: Burseg has shown you where the file is, it is also in the Zone too. He'll probably say....'How do you get into the Zone next'...

This sounds like a perfect excuse for you to install setups already done for you - AIAB or ClassicWB. No frustration. Problems solved.
