CD32 will not spin-up

I usually leave it plugged in ---
but with the units switch off

I am thinking something (Caps ?)
may have been worn down by
the constant power ?

The Laser Rail seems very stiff
but it returns to center...

Also it does not re-set
when you lift the lid...

Have you checked the obvious? I.e the switch when the lid is closed?

If the CD32 hasn’t been recapped. Have you opened up the case to see if you have any leakage?

Things to try Bromigo!

sometimes the lid must be kept shut very firmly, there's a switch pluging into the machine, if this switch is worn out it's too small and the lid is seen as open.

Send a message via MSN to FOL
First thing, is clean laser lens.
Being dirty would cause it not to spin.

Did Clean it = No Difference

Can't see any switch connected to the lid ???

Well, the big caps are (as usual) reversed and
have leaked --- can't see any damage

But would they stop the drive spinning ?

A lid switch would make sense as I have been
storing a load of crap on top of it...

Nah

Apparently the switch is a Photo-diode
on the ReSet/Volume board

Looks OK ?
How would I test it ?

I’d get it off for recap/test and repair Mang!
You appear to be in Liverpool, North Wets, England. Worth giving Mutant Catterpillar a shout as he’s just over the border in Wales (Anglesey). The guy Ian should be able to advise you Bromigo!

Also read this if leaking caps as yours might go the same way soon;

open the lid and look on the bottom left. You'll see some deeper plastic part entering in a slot when closing. That's where the switch is.

Black (Receiver ?) shows like a resistor (1 both ways)
White (Transmitter ?) shows 1 one way and 1280 the other

R3 = 1 one way and 178 the other
R4 = 1 both ways

Also that Copper (?) strip on the end of a wire
become detached --- I'm assuming it is a ground
for the headphone/speaker socket and not for
anything else ?

Is the flex ribbon cable going from the CD drive to the motherboard intact or plugged in securely. I had this problem before and it was all down to that cable not making proper contact.

Seems fine to me (at the motherboard end anyway)
Shielding removed to ensure a good connection

Simulating (or for real) the Lid opening
does not cause a reset

The Laser does not return to Center

£90 (+4 pnp)
for a 'new' drive
and that might not be the fault

Hmmmm...

Or £75 (+pnp)
to Mutant Caterpillar

Better option ---
but I'm skint at the moment
